Shrinking SFD's and PC misuse
    #21180994 - 01/26/15 05:01 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Hey everyone, just took up mycology recently after wanting to for so long and I've come across a few issues. I'm always on here and always have so many questions so I thought I'd join everyone.
So long story short, I messed up my second batch of rye pretty good along with the filter discs and I'm pretty sure I messed up my 30 qt all American too. I cooked for closer to an hour and a half rather than just an hour last time but one of the main issues I have is keeping the regulator weight from jumping so frequently. I opened up the pc when it was depressurized and took the foil off my jars to find shrinky dink versions of my SFD's. They were hard like plastic and a fourth the size. All but one of my fourteen jars did this, which confuses me. I also found that the bottom of my pc didn't seem flat anymore, it's sort of bubbled out from the center and can roll around if you push it....
So I assume my pressure cooker is broken.. But aren't the filter discs supposed to be able to handle extreme heat? Was it the loss of moisture because of my jiggling regulator? Or am I using faulty equipment?.... Lastly, how do I properly use an aa pressure cooker in terms of the psi readings? Should I be following the jiggling of the weight and not worry about what the gauge says so much? I just can't tell if i get a solid cook if I let my gauge drop to lower psi.. Thanks guys hope you can help me!

your pc ran out of water.

add more water next time '

it should be still usable unless its bubbled that bad

the gauge should be at 15psi. read the instructions, if you don't have them the PDF is on the internet and AA's website.

60m isn't enough to sterilize grain anyway it's always been 90m, 120m being better.

you keep the regulator from jiggling too much by turning the heat down only enough to maintain pressure

also never let the thing run out of water, if it runs out of water chances are you'll break it

The weight only needs to hiss every minute or so

Like they said 90 minutes

Sounds like you had way too much heat

I'd magnaflux that of make sure there's no stress fractures

You don't want it to turn into a rocket

so my problem is that I can't keep the gauge at 15 psi without the weight going crazy. Usually it takes lowering the heat to a point where the psi lowers to get the weight where it needs to be at.  If it goes down to maybe 13 for moments in time due to lowering the heat is that an incomplete session? And could of this be because Im not using enough water in the first place?.. Sorry, I'm not sure if I'm making sense or not.

The bottom of the pc sits on its center and is raised about a quarter inch at the most around the sides, so I'm not sure if it would be dangerous to use or not so I should probably just check before I use it

Alright I think I may have some of this figured out now.. I do have these jars that I wanted to cook, am I taking any risks by using this thing? Or should I just wait for a new one or to test it out?..

I use up to half a gallon of water depending on what I'm Pcing.

You can use a lot of water just as long as its not too far up to jars which water could would pour into.

Okay good to know.. I checked out the pot and it doesn't really seem too bad. It doesn't look cracked or anything like that. I think I'm gonna go ahead and try to use this thing sometime tommorow. Keeping the weight down a bit more and using more water this time... Thanks for the help!

Np good luck

I actually did something similar to this recently (ran out of water and cooked my filters - they were tyvek envelopes and did the same thing) and saw that my bottom had bulged out similar to how you describe yours, its not significant enough that the PC isn't stable - so Ive been using it since and its fine

Well to be honest I couldn't tell if it was normal or not and so I assumed that they're supposed to be flat... I do remember that I felt I turned up the heat up too high and so the bottom had some blackening on one side as well as this issue. I may call up AA tommorow and ask them before I do anything as well. Kind of back and forth especially with the speculation on wether it's safe or not

Hey I take that back - Using a PC thats been Dry run could be risky. After wilderness mentioned it could be unsafe I looked and found this thread - which is a pretty informative thread.

Now I'm kinda scared to use mine... :facepalm3:

:whathesaid: AA's have a reputation of being pretty sturdy You should be fine. Next time put somejar rings under your spacer and some tea towells under your jars and fill right to the bottom of the jars like a 1/4" above the bottomis OK  that'll give you a 3 hour window befre you run dry. I boiled a presto dry once Fell asleep while pcing but it still worked fine and that was after like 5 hours the guage was at about 22 psi and the safety plug didn't blow out. But man was it scary approaching the stove to shut it off, Took about 6 hours to get back to 0.

Also,  there was like a tiny tiny bit of water in there when I opened it up too just fyi. Not sure if that would count as dry or not but it deffinantly was down there... I'm gonna call AA tommorow just to be 100 percent so I don't do anything risky haha. And I've also heard that it's pretty hard to ruin an AA in that manner, don't know if I actually did something to mine or not..

The manual clearly states that most pressure gauges on AA pressure cookers WILL NOT read an accurate measurement of the actual pressure. Often times it will read slightly under the actual psi.

It also reassures you that the weight that you choose to set the rocker weight at, (ie, 5, 10, or 15 psi) is completely accurate.

So, that means if you set your rocker weight to cook at 15 psi, your pressure gauge will probably only read about 12 or 13 psi. Totally normal.

If your cranking your PC up so your gauge is reading 15psi - your obviously gonna blow through a lot of water, which is why you ran dry and fucked up your cooker.

The manual also warns that should you run your pressure cooker dry, return it to the factory for a saftey inspection before using it again.

Your SFD are the least of your worries at this point.
