creating spore syringes
    #2118145 - 11/17/03 10:07 PM (13 years, 21 days ago)

I've got a few good-looking EQ's growing off my cakes and would like to fill a spore syringe to avoid buying any more spores. My question is, what is the best way to print the cap in order to create a syringe? I tried it once before, but the cap was too moist and grew some mold. I snipped off the cap as soon as the veil opened and placed it in a jar covered in tin foil, hoping it would dry and drop its spores. I know the method of placing the cap on a piece of paper to get a print, but how do you get the spores in H20 so they can be sucke dinto the syringe? When you put a cap in a jar to dry, do you cover the jar or leave it open to allow moisture to escape? When is the best stage of the life cycle to snip off the cap and place it in the jar?

Thanks for sharing your successful methods!

I've always liked this simple and effective TEK:

As for printing the cap, you should wait until the mushroom develops a little longer, rather than "JUST when the veil breaks". A lot of the times, the spores haven't even begun to drop!

A good way to print is to take a cap which has begun to flatten out. Take a plastic or a paper cup, and put over the cap so that it dries out and drops spores, without molding. Also, use tin foil, as it is usually a little more sterile. You can even wipe it with rubbing alcohol before hand.

I use a plastic container that can be PCd and put the foil I?m gonna take the print on in it. The container has a hole in it covered in tyvek. The hole lets the cap dry a little so no molds grow and we all know what the tyvek is for.

This is a old pic I was using coffee filters then but fell in love with tyvek.

Search for LiL kussh (Bad spelling sorry kussh), syringe making tek. Looks pretty effective.

You basically pin a cap on the inside of the lid of a normal half pint jar, close it and let the spore drop in the jar. You then throw your water in and suck it back. I should work pretty well!
