Staying Safe on the Road
    #21178850 - 01/26/15 11:54 AM (9 years, 3 months ago)

It's only January but festivals are fast approaching (SXSW is in March!)and that means a lot of you are going to be driving long distances with drugs/paraphernalia/etc in your cars. Obviously, I would never recommend going anywhere but your own private property with these kinds of things, but that's up to you. I've put over 75k miles on my car in the past 5 years, almost all of them carrying something. I've gotten pinched once, but the charges were dismissed because the search was unwarranted. I'm not a driver for the cartels or anything like that, just an average dude who travels a lot and likes to have fun when he gets wherever he's going. That being said, here's how to avoid getting pulled over, searched and arrested.

First I will start with tips on how to avoid getting stopped in the first place. All of these things assume your car is in proper working order and you follow all traffic laws. Don't carry any weapons, don't smoke weed in your car and most importantly don't give the cops probable cause for anything.

1. Travel ALONE. Especially if you're going to a festival, a car packed to the brim with people looking like hippies is an easy target. One guy/girl who looks like they're just passing through is much less likely to get stopped.

1.5. Clean out the entire passenger area of your car before you leave. Having shit piled up is just asking for a cop to pull you over for obstructed vision or something like that. Sometimes you can't avoid this if you have to pack camping gear and stuff for a festival, but do your best to fit everything in the trunk. I will usually pack a bag with clothes for one or two nights and put it in my back seat along with a pair of shoes and a coat. If you are bringing nice clothes with you, hang them in your rear drivers side window and you will look like you are on a business trip or whatever. Cops are 100% going to profile and looking like an innocuous businessman/woman on the way to a meeting is about the safest you can possibly look.

2. Drive in the right lane. Cops usually drive in the left lane, so if you are in the left lane then they have a better chance of catching you speeding, touching the lines, etc. One of THE BEST ways to ensure you aren't pulled over is fall into the middle of a group of cars all using their cruise control at about the same speed.

3. USE YOUR FUCKING CRUISE CONTROL. I usually set it between 3-7 over the speed limit, depending on how fast the people around me tend to go.

4. If you are leaving a state where weed is legal/medical and entering one where it is illegal, cross the state line on a rural road away from the main highway. For example, leaving Colorado going east, use 40/287 to go into Kansas, instead of using 70. A 30-45 minute detour is way better than 30-45 days in jail. As others have said "drug checkpoints" are usually just a ploy to get people turning off the highway.

5. To expand on my last point, cops are going to sit and radar in places where they are going to have a lot of traffic go by to increase their chances of getting someone. Lots of traffic usually means lots of cops!

6. Learn about defensive driving. The last thing you want is to get into an accident because of someone else. I can't begin to count the number of times I would have been in an accident if I wasn't paying attention. To go along with this, if you are going to need to use your phone for GPS or something, get a car mount for it. This keeps your eyes closer to the road and keeps you safe if you go through a stae where it's illegal to use your phone while driving.

7. PLACES TO BE CAREFUL:
A. Highway exit/entrance ramps. Police will frequently set up on an overpass, with another cop waiting on the merging ramp to light up on anyone who's speeding. The one time I was arrested, I was on an exit ramp where two highways merge into one and I sped up too much to try to avoid someone coming into my lane. The cop was merging at the same time from the other highway and got me before I could even see him.

B. As you get closer and closer to cities, you will start seeing more and more cops. City cops won't venture much past city limits.

C. Small towns. If the town is big enough to have a police department, you might as well bank on there being a cop sitting and waiting at that spot where the speed limit drops from 55-35 so make sure you slow down ahead of time.

Now that we've gone over a lot of ways to ensure you look like a regular joe on his way to a meeting or wedding or whatever, let's talk about what to do when you see red and blue in the mirror.

1. Pull over somewhere safe for the cop. If you are on the highway you will basically have to pull over to the shoulder, but try to make it as easy as possible for the cop to get out, say hello, tell you why he pulled you over, write the ticket and let you on your way.

2. Don't mess with anything except rolling down the window and waiting for the cop with your hands on the wheel. Keep your license and registration in your center console so you can keep your glove box locked if need be. When I was 17 and got pulled over for the first time the cop almost pulled his gun on me because I went into my glove box to get my registration before he got to my car. Take some deep breaths and stay as calm as possible while you wait.

3. Just be friendly. Yes sir, no sir, etc. Even if the cop pulled you over for something questionable or that you don't think you did, the worst thing that can happen to you right now is you get out of the car, get searched, come up clean, get a ticket and get sent on your way. If it is night time, you will probably be asked if you have had anything to drink. Assuming you are driving sober, look the cop in the eye and tell him alcohol makes you sick or something that implies you don't drink alcohol, as this usually gets a positive response. If you get asked to step out, turn off the car, and put the keys in your pocket. The police are allowed to search your "immediate area of control" any time they stop you, which includes basically all of the passenger area of the car excluding the glove box and trunk. If you have nothing in the passenger area of the car, they can't go any farther. If they start making threats about bringing dogs or whatever, just ask if you are under arrest. If you aren't under arrest then you should ask if you are free to go because they no longer have a reason to detain you. If the only thing you've done wrong is commit a moving violation, there's nothing they can do to you except write a ticket without further probable cause.

Alright I'm sure I've missed some things that I will think about later on but this is a general guide to avoid getting arrested on the highway. Remember that you aren't in a hurry and don't be afraid to take detours if they're safer. Rural roads are your friend, because cops don't go places where they aren't going to have frequent chances to make stops. Getting there safe is more important than getting there early.

Stay safe and don't get booked out there everyone!

Driving cross country alone is sketchy.

Leave your car messy.  No cop wants to dig through garbage.

Stay OFF backroads?  What excuse would you give the cop if he pulled you over in no where land not even on the freeway a thousand miles from your address?

It sounds like you've been to bonnaroo.....once.

Cops don't travel on back roads. Cops don't drive around in the middle of no where because then they can't respond to emergency calls. Beat cops are looking for quantity of tickets, because that's how they fund their department. If they spent their time out in the boonies they'd never be able to catch enough people to pay their salaries.

Exactly.  You have never been in any trouble.

Aside from keep all the lights on your car working, and make sure it's registered and you do the speed limit ( which you recommend speeding ), it's all a crap shoot.  I'm just really bitter today.  I'm thinking with about .0007%

You're pretty much right about it being a crap shoot. The main point I was trying to make is do everything to make yourself look as innocuous as possible. Cops profile like crazy and that's why I think it's important to look respectable when you're traveling. If your car is dirty, the cop could easily assume you're a deadbeat and more likely to have drugs.

The car full of junk and trash is much different then the car with coffee cups and paperwork everywhere. One says I'm a slobs and don't give a fuck the other says I'm busy, in a hurry and unorganized.

Although I had a friend with 3 hellion children and a disgustingly thrashed van with months old mcdonalds crammed everywhere and he got pulled over doing a drug run, the cop looked I. The back saw the disaster with carseats in back and told him he would normally search but wasn't gonna stick his hands in all that shit and let him go. This probably isn't sound advise though.

1. Cut your hair. Business cut.
2. Shave.
3. Wear a suit or at the very least a nice button up shirt
4. Glasses are good too if you really want to go the extra mile
5. Be white. If you cannot be white, bring a white friend.
6. Keep the car decently clean, inside and out.
7. Most importantly, make sure your tags, license, ETC is all totally current.
8. Drive safe
9. If pulled over, remain cool. Relax. Be friendly but keep the talking to a minimum. "Can I help you?" "No sir." "Yes sir."
10. Make sure the cop can see your hands at all times. Not seeing your hands makes cops very nervous.
