Terrible strains for my first attempt
shoebox2 5L NATALENSIS - 6.5cm tall Sub 14/08 - S2B - 0,6L spawn (bottom jar had a tiny uncolonized spot) + 3L CV - ratio 1:5 mixed spawn + pseudo casing well pressed way above field capacity; gentle mist before lid
18/8

shoebox1 "ventilated" 5,6L PENIS ENVY - 3,5cm tall Sub - ratio 1:2 14/08 - S2B - 0,9L spawn tomentose + 2L CV Really well pressed + layered spawn + pseudo casing well pressed and way above field capacity
18/8

after the penis colonization: to case or not to case? that's the question?
More info on my first attempt to grow fungi

Way over field capacity? The water in the bottom of your PE shoebox is a sign that your sub is way to wet
You scared me for a bit there I think that yellowish stain, you are referring to, it's just a reflection of the bucket the shoebox is on. It's definitely on the wet side, but there's no stagnant water in the bottom from what I can see:

I'm inclined to do a casing layer with plain coco coir, after full surface colonization (it's at 50% now), since the it was so fast - day 5 now after S2B - and the substrate height it's just 3,5cm, what do you guys think?

PE will love a top layer of coir, natal seems to go either way. Looking good though, and you’re starting off with probably the top 2 mushrooms for a lot of people so….
Thank you for the feedback! Need the positive reinforcement, cuz of lack of experience and also so many conflicting and some obsolete information - hard to know which path to follow
So 50/50 peat moss/verm casing for PE is old tek shenanigans? or just coir work just as good?

Yasss I followed this one, that's why I ended up with a thin substrate(3,5cm height) because of the advised compression - even tho I used total: 1qt Spawn + 2qts CV (I know, I should have used more following the recipe...)
Just wondering if adding another thick casing on top will increase volume of the cake, resulting in better yield and/or more possible flushes... so many doubts, so green

PE on day 6 after S2B at about 80% colonization might be a bit too wet, right? halp

polyfil smells moldy master jar was enigma on sawdust, so it's probably the reffered debris Also, the first batch of WBS was soaked for 8h and simmered for 5 min - that produced clean and fast colonization. This one I left it for 24h in water and no simmer... probably too much... So many variables, so much testing and error "Fail, Fail Again, Fail Better...."

24h progression between pics: 3 Natalensis doing natalensis shit and 1 PE being slow/staled?

I have 2 showboxes per tub, using "Pastywhyte’s Ez dialed monotubs" but humidity level never gets lower than 99%... leading me to conclud that there's not much FAE going on, even with the 16 1/4" holes per tub. I'm tempted to drill a couple of more holes in there... what do you guys say?

Am I in trouble? Is there a way to salvage this?

3 tiny patches at the surface. What is it? pin mold? Somehow seems inactive... and does not smell... Is spraying Hydrogen peroxide ( H2O2) a good idea?
Info about the shoebox:
shoebox2 5L PENIS ENVY - 7cm tall Sub - ratio 1:5 17/08 - S2B - 0,75L spawn + 3,5L CV (including casing) Well pressed (p9 style) + mixed spawn + pseudo casing well pressed at field capacity; heavy mist before lid

 My first active pins! Yay!
Natalensis / Penis envy

And some yummy blob, metabolites and primordia

What to do or change in this stage? (besides controlling myself and not opening the lid to take pics) Does surface conditions seem decent? Misting a bit?

water tubs? I've seen some images of a setup where the shoeboxes are partially submerged in water inside a tub, is this what you're referring to? What's up with that? just to increase humidity? Is there a Tek link someone can share?

when the light doesnt emit heat (what leds don't too too much of) i dont see a reason for backing off the light?
Agreed. I'm aiming for intensity with those few 810 Lumens and 9w lamp, so distance equals even more weakening of brightness reaching the casing
