Wasp said: but yes you are partially sterilizing your sub. when you pasteurize it but not completely which why we don't say sterilize you do leave beneficial micro organisms AND some non beneficial micro organisms hence why pasteurization has certain steps in order to defeat this
there are none of these organisms present in coir. none to kill, none to survive. just cook it so its easier digestible for the myc and you're good!

there is fractional sterilization if that's what you want to call it... even when we pressure cook our grain all were doing is widening a window of opportunity and crossing our fingers the myc will take over there is still bacteria present even after a good pressure cooking
@spacechildo
lol I will never 'cook' coir... only pasteurize maybe you should look up your vocabulary.. take some science classes at your local community college organisms are present

what he was saying I think or what I would say is that coir just needs some heat treatment. it may have microbes or whatever I don't know don't care. ive used un-treated coir plenty with verm as a casing and it never contamed. and sterilized or pasteurized or bucket it doesn't matter, you want to get it hot so something in the coir breaks down and becomes easier for mycelium to eat. I think when you sterilize it the myc might even rip through it faster. I think I remember psty saying that one time but im not sure. I rarely use just cvg

spacechildo is correct.
Anything from pasteurization to partial sterilization to sterilization works fine for coir. Prolonged exposure to heat seems to help mycelium colonize it faster. The theory is that because the lignin and cellulose get broken down and are more easily metabolized.
wasp, if you are pasteurizing, then you are cooking. Perhaps you should follow your own advice.

yup! this!
and no micro organisms will survive the process of pressing the coir into a block. that stuff is hot! I have taken a couple courses or classes of biology and we never talked about coir in either one of them

What makes it sterilzed? I bring my coir to a boil for 5 mins then let it cool off.
