Malt extract agar prep

So I've made to switch to agar, picked up some dishes and premixed malt extract agar

Can someone give me the measurements to mix the malt extract agar for say 20 dishes, all I could find was making MEA from agar flakes + malt

A liter is just above 32oz  Think of a large coke bottle.  How many does that fill?  Heck, we don't even know what size of dishes you're looking to fill. :shrug:  Soo, go get ya a 32oz coke and take a good look at it. :crazy2:  If it feels safe... go with the 25rames of mea to half a liter of water and start from there.  I will say that a liter will fill 20 of my dishes and their roughly about 4-5 inches in diameter

I was using MEA pre mix up u ntill last week , now I'm mixing up PDA.

Cron's right, 50 g to a litre.

I sugguest half litre batches. It will fill more than twenty plates but its ok if you have leftover, it will just harden in the bottle and you just cook it up again. Just dont have the bottle open in open air or it'll grow lots of nasties.


What I do, is use an empty whisky bottle. Just drill a hole in the lid and stuff w poly, felt or cut an SFD. I'm not sure if you need it but I use a filter lid. Remember to fill your PC water level up as high as your agar, prevents boil over messes.

I like fungiperfecti MEA, no need to cook it, that's a big plus for me because i'm lazy. Just mix it with cold water. I do 49 grams for 1 liter. That's about 7 table spoons.

The other MEA's that i've tried, they all need to be cooked to dissolve well...

Mine didn't at first but I found after it got older (maybe exposure to air from opening it, moisture?) I had to cook it to have it dry clear

I like PDA though, simple enough to mix up myself. Cheap enough too anout a dollar a litre

Yeah, i'm trying PDA too.. is super cheap. I want to try also that dog food agar they all talk about.

Depends on how full you fill your dishes. I mix up about 300-400ml of agar at a time. If I have extra after pouring the dishes, I will cap the bottle and put it in the fridge

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.
