marathon

I plan on running this year in all the races I can get in to. I've been training for sometime now. I'm just wondering if I should hit the gym sometimes? For some upper body workouts.

I know you don't use your upper body but I'd still think it'll help maybe.
I will tell you my training plan I've been doing.

Monday I warm up in the morning and do a 5 mile jog. Once I'm done with that I get on the bike and do 10 miles.

Tuesday rest

wednesday Run 10 miles walk 5 run 11

Thursday  run 5 walk 5 bike 5 walk 5 slow jog 5

Friday rest

Saturday jog 26

Sunday rest

I've been doing this a little over 1 month. If you have any tips please let me know it will be helpful.

I have no tips, but damn that routine sounds pretty hardcore. I feel accomplished if I run a mile every other day. Right on.

Yeah, that is an aggressive regime.

I think you could train "smarter" using one of hal higdons programs, i think you will burn out running a marathon every week. Periodization is key.

However, to answer your question - yes, cross training would be useful. However, I would gravitate towards activities like swimming, and bodyweight exercises, or even kettlebell before lifting weights, if you are training for running distance running specifically.

You're gonna destroy your knees if you keep that up.
