Id just fit it with a cat back exhaust system. There's usually only a few option for each car model. And probably not many at all for a jeep. I'd start by searching for ' your cars model cat back exhaust package ' or something. But because jeeps don't usually get modded up, there may not be many mass produced options, meaning you may need to get a custom one built or select parts to piece together, which has problems in itself.
Cat backs get the best sound, it's an exhaust system that goes all the way from the engine out to the muffler tip at the end. When most people upgrade their exhaust, they usually just upgrade the middle tip bit, which doesn't really do a whole lot at all.

Yea I should probably go with a cat back and do it right. I agree with you except that jeeps don't get modded. Really? Maybe not like Street Rod modding but they Definitely get modded. Lol

Op if your just looking for sound This seems like what you describe what you're looking for Even if you have to go with "a Generic one size fits all cat" and can get some tuned headers a good muffler shop 'not Midas'that bends pipes could probably set you up for maybe 1000 to 1200 $ not including the header that would be another probably 300$ so around 1500$ and end up getting you more H.P. and torque in the process. And since I'ts a Jeep liberty grocery geter I doubt you're gona be doing any rock climbing with it. Remember what other posters have said you need a certain ammount of 'Back Pressure" or you rob performance so slapping a set of 3" pipes and a muffler on it won't help.

Extractors give a bit more of a raw beefy sound too. Like more of an engine grunty sound as opposed to the brrrrr from just the muffler tip.
Some of the best sounding cars I've ever heard are just a big fat v8 block with extractors. It's the type of sound where you can hear the power of the engine as it winds up and just sound mean!

OP I don't think you're going to get the sound you're after without a full exhaust, header to exhaust tip. Muffler alone will sound like a ricer. Catback will be better but won't have a throaty, deep sound. Header + catback = desired sound. Anything else will likely be a waste of money in my opinion.

Op check out some jeep forums . While it's not an xj or a wrangler you should be able to find some great information about it.
Man when I had my xj those forums were supper helpful. I don't know anything about that engine but I will say a few things just in general about the exhaust. If you live in a climate that has snow for the love of God get a stainless steel exhaust. I've put 3 exhaust on my brother in law s 89 dino . The cheap fucker won't spring for stainless and it rust out in about a. Year. Also check local laws some places Dont allow cut off or cut out exhausts.
I think you will need to spend a bit more then 200 unless you know how to fab it yourself and even then just because you can doesn't mean you should. My danna 44 had so many missing teeth and tired to fab a replacement. Was a pain in the as and would have saved time and maybe money if I just bought the 're built kit.
You might want to check Craig's list or goto a you pull if that budget can't budge .

You could install a "dump tube" but every time you pull up to a light you'd have to open it to make noise. Like trekie says check the jeep forums. Amazing what those guys do with inline 258 6s and I'd bet you can find for a work around on that 4 cyl probably just a cut down 258 kinda like the 4.3 v6 chevy is just a 350 SB with 2 cylinders cut off.
