swiss army knife oil?
    #21164332 - 01/22/15 06:50 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

i just got my new swiss army knife and reminds me of the old one i had which saw a lot of action when i was in scouts and a few years later cutting hash and many other general uses but lost it somewhere,  im wondering if i need to spend the ammount for the official oil or could i get away with something like this or will that do it harm more than good

As a person who is familiar with cleaning and maintaining guns, I am going to say no.
Not fammilar with the product you posted, but any oil specific for the use of knives should work well.

Whats the appeal with swiss army knives ? I had one when I was a kid, they seem kind of dinky.

Any oil will work, 3 in 1, olive oil, motor oil. Doesn't matter.

Yup. Fixed blade and a wetstone never fails. Try banging a rock into the back of a SAK to cut trees down/build tools.

oil is a bad idea, oil attracts and holds grit, grit that stays in the
knife and causes premature wear. use a dry lubricant such as graphite
or CRC dry moly lube

ok man thanks for the tip, so you're sying their own product is to wear it down causing you to end up buying another knife, its £5-6 for 5ml !!!

found some graphite for £2.60 and comes very highly rated, thank you

it's not as simple as wiping it down, it gets into places that it cant be
wiped away just as the oil does, the more complications the more crap that
will get into it and cause issues and the faster the knife becomes
worthless. swiss army knives arent cheap, a $5 knife from a convenience
store is disposable, but even the most basic models from victorinox and
wenger can cost $50 with prices running to more than $300, a few models
even cost more than $1000

so while you're saying it's not.... it kinda is

what about canned air and iso alcohol?

I daily carry a Kershaw speedsafe with no issues of it getting gritty.

I have a victorinox swiss army knife but have only used it 3-4 times 2 of were to open a bottle of wine and it seems like a nice knife.

Tri-Flow. Teflon based inhibits rust, moisture and grit one small spritz is all you need and it doesn't stink like petroleum based lubricants. Smells like bannanas. " we all know Bannana peels are slippery"After that WD 40 it is based on fish oil and the WD40 was the trade name meaning water displacing formula 40 that was worked on. Op if you buy the swiss army brand you are just paying for the name. :thatsayes:

word. i mean i get what you're sayin  I mean for like a cheapo fixed blade knife like a moray knife I wouldn't hesitate to throw some three in one on it. but for folders or multitools you're right the dry teflon lube is good
