something I saw on the way home

I told one of the shroomy people here I would put up some pics from work, so here's a few pics of a very large bird I saw on the way home from my taxi job. I was on my bicycle just peddling along deleriously after a long night's work. it was sunrise early last summer. I looked to my left at an interesting vacant lot (now a Home Depot --curses!) and there was this huge white bird coming in for a landing on a telephone utility pole. I almost fell off the bike. I hurried closer on foot and it took off majestically to find a safer perch on this billboard. I got as close as I could and zoomed in with my video camera. Anybody wanna guess what kind of bird that is? I'm not sure but I have some ideas.

Probably just your run of the mill hawk...we have lots of them around here.

I think Blastrid is correct. adrug could be right though. That's more likely. It was cool to see in a dense urban settiing. I rarely see that. I see a lot of wildlife at night. Mostly huge rats. Though I've seen coyotes, fox, skunks and coons.
Peregrins do hunt and nest at a few locales around the city. This wasn't one of them. So, it could be a hawk just passing through.
