Psilocybe caerulipes
    #21163694 - 01/22/15 04:04 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

What mushrooms in the West Virginia-Ohio area can be mistaken for Psilocybe Caerulipes. Poisonous or otherwise. What is the best way to rule these out when finding a possible Psilocybe caerulipes. Thanks for your answers.

Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata (also psychedelic), Pholiotina spp., and Galerina spp. come to mind. Clear blue (not black or brown) bruising and a dark purple-brown spore print will separate the psychedelic species from the poisonous. Post photos of anything you consider eating.

Look for ovoids in may, once the temps rise and the rain starts.

Until then, do your research.    :takingnotes:

Thanks for the replies. While I'm on the subject I saw these on a hike yesterday. I didn't have anything with me to do a spore print. Just wondering if it's worth going back and looking into more. Pretty sure they aren't but they do somewhat resemble Psilocybe caerulipes. I'm not planning on eating anything with out the proper knowledge just wondering if it's worth a second look.  Thank you

Definitely not I'm afraid. They might be a Galerina species.

Looks like a Galerina or maybe a Tubaria species.

Probably a Galerina species. alot of small nondescript Galerina species grow in moss.

Also looks like it might be darkening near the base, which some Galerina including G. marginata, do.

That depends on how much you are interested in deadly mushrooms.  This is probably Galerina marginata.
