Is being Vegan any better or worse than being Vegetarian?

In terms of personal health and environmental impact is it any better for us and the planet we live on to be vegan as opposed to being vegetarian? Ive been vegetarian for 6 years and have considered going vegan but never really compared the two diets in any real way.
Please discuss properly and stay on topic, provide links and articles when possible.
This is not a debate thread for meat vs no meat diets.
This is only a discussion on vegan vs vegetarian diets. I realize a lot of you feel both diets are unnecessary and thats fine, this just isnt the thread for you.
Thanks.

I think which diet is better for you depends upon your personal metabolic needs.
Which diet is better for the planet? Well, in order to milk cows, they need to be fed, so it's still a waste of food to be feeding cows in order to milk cows.
Beyond that, I don't know.
I am neither vegetarian nor vegan but I don't drink milk because my experience leads me to believe it is bad for my skin.

I'm a vegetarian as well. I am one because I think it's immoral to farm raise animals and to give them no freedom so that we can eat them. It's about respecting nature and the well being of animals for me. Have eaten meat that has been hunted/fished.. Been a vegetarian for 12 years.
I also would like to be vegan because I think that's immoral too. But... I have never tried hard enough to become one.
I know I didn't answer shit. Not sure if either are better than one another.

Theres a lot of evidence to support milks connection to osteoporosis, its a commonly believed myth that milk fights osteoporosis. You are better off without milk. I dont drink it either.

like morrow said, it's all depends on your body. I've looked briefly into the whole "blood type vs diet" thing, and I think it holds some* weight.
I've done both, and personally I feel pretty damn good on both, but ended up staying vegetarian out of laziness. The only animal product I consume is yeast in breads, and cheese on pizza. I don't really like cheese on its own very much, but I LOVE PIZZA. and vegan cheese is total garbage. almond cheese is the onle vegan cheese ive found that was palatable.
I might go vegan again in time, but it takes more time and energy to transition into that diet than I am willing to give right now.
I found a happy balance and I've never been in better shape than the last handful of years without any meat.
I actually went vegetarian after a gnarly OBE on a meditative mushroom trip

They say the dairy and egg industry are the most cruel if your doing it for ethical reasons, also pretty sure your not supposed to have lactose after a certain age. I used to be vegan, and its not just diet when you call yourself a vegan it means no animal products like leather and nothing tested on animals. I eat meat now to sustain some weight, being vegan made me so skinny.
I find the vegan thing kind of stupid now as a long term lifestyle choice, its gone to far at that point, unless you shop at an all vegan store or something its pretty much impossible to not somehow be supporting industries that kill animals.

I'm vegetarian but not vegan.
Even then we still are killing plants.

I cant function on a vegan or vegetarian diet. I need meat. I did do it for almost 2 years once though but I realized i was never satisfied, could not gain muscle mass as effectively, had less strength and stamina, and dramatically less pleasure in eating. Now I try to eat healthy and ethically by only eating game meat (lived a wild, natural life, not factory farmed), freshwater fish and free range eggs. To me this is the ideal diet, high in vegetables, fats, fruits and proteins from game meat and freshwater fish.
An ideal meal is an elk steak with brussell sprouts or a bison steak with spinach salad. I limit my carb intake and only eat healthy breads that is whole wheat, multigrain, ancient grain, sprouted, quinoa etc.
I try not to eat factory farmed meat so basically no chicken, beef of pork, but especially no pork. I also try to avoid eating ocean fish.

that's not always true.

Vegetables, like roots and leafy greens.
Fruits will usually drop without killing the plants.
I guess I just feel bad about consumption.

it took me a few months to adjust and learn how to balance my diet. At first, I knew nothing about a "proper" diet and I lost a bunch of weight from just eliminating things from my diet. I was also really poor so i lived off of waffles and peanut butter for like 4-5 months
with that said, a meatless diet may not work for your body, and I have no problem with people that include meat in their diet, as long as they are conscious about it like you are.
it just bothers me how many people in this country blindly consume chickens and cows that are in terrible health, and don't think twice about it.

yeah I feel ya. I've come to accept it though. I think the intention is key. Be grateful for the life that you are consuming in order to sustain your own, and it makes me feel a little better.
At the end of the day, life and death are intertwined, and we have no choice at a certain point.
The other option is to starve

Even sadder is seeing the animals killed and then the flesh wasted.

Once you try game meat you realize that factory farmed meat tastes terrible and makes you feel terrible while game meat is delicious and makes you feel amazing.

i would immagine that a vegan diet would be slightly healthier as long as you supplented your diet with supplements such as a b-complex(B12 and B1 are especially important), calcium, D, iodine, iron and a vegan source of protein/amino acids. most of which can be found in any decent quality daily-multivitamin or large ammounts of dark green veggies like kale
