Casing a mono tub

Decided to attempt putting a casing layer on my mono tub to help try and prevent the blobs I have been encountering recently. All of the grows that I have previously attempted have been done without a casing layer and I am still a little unsure of the procedure. Do you mix in the spawn and substrate and then apply the casing layer on top of the mixture and then just fruit it when it appears to be colonized? If it means anything, I am attempting Thai Lipa Yai Cubes and not a PE strain.

A casing layer gets applied to a fully colonized substrate.....
Wait until 20-30% of it is colonized, then fruit.

Awesome thanks
Another thing...
If I were to take part of my original substrate and set it to the side for the casing layer to be used after the mixture of substrate/spawn becomes colonized, would I need to worry about any pasteurization/sterilization of the substrate to prevent bacteria or could I get away with just setting it on top of the colonized substrate as is?

If its CVG then you're fine. I've had coir in my bucket for the close to a month now. I still just grab it out the bucket, no nothing, and throw it on some spawn.

Do you pasturize or do you like to sterilize it?
I'm too nervous to do that haha. If its CVG and I pasturized it, leftover like that i sterilize it

Bucket tek.
It's actually not that uncommon, Pasty ziploc'd some coir and put it in the fridge and used it out of the bag.

I'm actually thinking of going back to sterilizing my CVG for a bit. I git in the habit of pasturizibg but since I'm leaving the straw out this run I might be bettrr off goibg sterilized

You don't want to sterilize your coir, only pasteurize. You sterilize your jars or you can sterilize a casing layer but not a bulk substrate.
Even then sterilizing isn't really necessary.

I thought you could sterilize coir, I think bucket tek at least partially sterilizes it? Ive only gone bucket tek and pAsteurization. I put my sub in quart jars in my PC pot and keep it between 140 and 170 for an hour.

I used to sterilize my coir without any problems. The only reason I pasteurize it now is because it's mixed with horse manure.

I thought sterilization and pasteurization were two different things... What are your steps to sterilize Mustard?

Yea I started pasturizing when I started adding straw.
To sterilize I think you just run a PC cycle yea?

Sterilization in our hobby is a 90 minute PC cycle at 15 PSI (Times vary for agar and smaller batches)
Pasteurization (Poo, casing layers, etc.) is getting the entire substrate to 140-160ish for an hour or so.

Ahh, okay that makes a lot more sense. I could have sworn I'd read multiple times that Pasteurization > Sterilization but who knows, I read a lot of shit.

Well it depends on the application. If you pasteurized brf, or your grain jars you wouldn't have much success.
