Red spot on grain jar?
    #21154724 - 01/21/15 10:30 AM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Hey guys I was checking all my jars, and resently I had two of my jars get hit by a possible contam that is black but seems like mycelium is over taking it so Im not quite sure so im letting them go and watching how they do everyday. But I was checking my one jar I made ten days prior to my last ones, and I noticed a red spot, and ive heard that can be a sign of contam. Its been in since the 1/8 i believe and they are about 30-50% colonized so let me know if you think its a contam or not nd if it is what should I do with it?

Here is a full pic of the jar, it seems dirty cause I added gypsum to it and kinda made it muddy:O

You do know you should add the gypsum before you soak the grain right? And only a little bit like a 1/2 tsp will do 8 or so jars. Looks like you made drywall mud. That red speck is probably just some random debris that was in your grain if it doesn't get bigger I wouldn't worry about it.

Not sure what the red spot is, but it sure looks dry.

Sometimes the grains get a weird color, I've seen black in my WBS jars and it turned out to be a broken sunflower.

I have seen red only once in my life and it was in a bacteria/cobweb tub.

bottom left hand corner there is a red spot that looks like jam.. I was not eating a jelly sandwich when I made this tub.

Well all your work finally paid off. We now know red = improper sterilization.

Shake the jar at 10 to 20 percent colonized. If it recovers well and finishes colonizing then thats a good sign.
