Looking for advice on punching holes in fruiting bags

I have some pearl oyster and some lions mane going. How big or small
should the holes that the mushrooms fruit from be? 1/4", 1/8"? Also, I
punch the holes in the side of the bags. What's best, the center of the
bag, the top of the bag? And how deep should the holes go into the bag?
What's a good tool for this? Would a clean nail 1/4" in diameter 2" long
be good? Thanks.

on my lions mane I just cut two slits in it vertical and horizontal about 1-2 inches across.
depends on how big or how many fruits per block you want for the length of the cuts.
for instance - you could have one 5 pound lions mane block and do just one cut in on the bag - promoting a single massive fruit.
You could make 2-4 smaller cuts around the block, to encourage smaller but more fruits.
keep in mind lions mane and oysters are different species - but the same technique can be applied to both.
also keep in mind you want to make your cutting big enough so the main "stem" thats attached to the block isn't choking and can grow out as large as needed.
also why i would recommend a "slit" over a hole puncture.
hope that helps

I took a broadhead arrow tip, razor sharp, and fastened it to an old worn out T handle wrench, works very well. Makes perfect X cuts in the bags just the right size.

for what killing someone??
the other nice thing I should say about cutting slits is it can rough of the block which some species like to promote fruiting. Im pretty sure lions mane is one.

So it cuts the hole then seals it afterwards!

I appreciate all the input. I have a razor to cut slits but where could I acquire an arrowhead or a broadhead?

Ya, most sporting goods or hunting stores have them. If you ask the owner/manager really nicely I bet they would have a cheap/free used single one in the back "repair" rooms that most stores have.
