Zone 6 Year Long Outdoor Cultivation

AFOAF started looking into what it would take to successfully grow cubes perennially in zone 6. There is already a lot of great info on this site, but perhaps the info or methods may be useful for others. Any tips or corrections are always welcome. As background, an outdoor grow was successfully done a few years back, but the mycelium didn't make it through the winter.
Known Info: Cubes grow naturally in the Gulf Coast area; Zone 8b Zone Chart Spawn temps should be 75-81F (assumed to be soil temp) Fruiting temps should be 68-72F (surface / air temp) Humidity should be between 95-100% Zone 6 provides the proper temperature and humidity for growth and fruiting during the summer. Minimum Air temps in zone 8b are 15 to 20F Minimum Air temps in zone 6 are -5 to 0F
Previous Attempt: Moe's Outdoor Tek Plots were covered with compost for the winter.
Assumptions: - The previous effort for perennial growth failed due to winter temps. This is a rough assumption; it is possible that a fall dry spell caused problems, insufficient hole depth, etc. - It is possible to perennially grow cubes outdoors in zone 6
Current Approach: The primary hypothesis is that raising the soil temperature 20 degrees above normal zone 6 soil temps will result in successful perennial growth. Additionally, we would like to know the minimum temperature for organism survival.
The first step is to determine the normal soil temperature for the area. The current soil temperature in the area is 4C (39F). This will be monitored to determine the seasonal low.
The second step is see what it takes to raise the temperature. Since we don't have the seasonal low temperature of the soil in Zone 8, we will assume that it is correlated perfectly to the air temperature. This is where the 20F temperature difference comes from. The current plan is to use a combination of raised beds, a south facing wall, and a cold frame to increase the temperature. The plot improvements and temperature monitoring are TBD.
The third step will be testing. It is hoped that this will be done next winter.

I just want to know how you plan on heating your soil 20 degrees.

Get a ton of manure and start a panaeolus patch. Make some gymnopilus dowels and inoculate a bunch of logs. Do seasonal cube grows. Ovoids or cyans might survive, if you cover the patch with tarps and hay/straw.

Thanks, d0urd3n. I'll definitely keep in mind that there are other options.
taGyo, my plan is to use methods such as cold frames, heavy mulching, and a south facing stone wall to increase the soil temperature. I found a nice post on creating microclimates (link). According to the post, the methods above should raise the soil temperature about 7 deg C, or about 45 deg F.

Do you think cyans and ovoids would be fine without tarps and hay or straw in zone 6 stevo? I'm in zone 6 as well. I did some searching a while back and people said to cover them but I didn't see much as far as people's first hand knowledge on it.

I've been wondering the same thing I read somewhere that cyansens can survive in zone 6 as long as you "winterize" your patch somewhat but I can't remember the thread it was years ago ive yet to try it but wanted to get a patch going soon to try this spring for fall and watch to see how it recovers next year

taGyo, We do get reasonable amounts of sun... It's enough to keep some solar powered gadgets going, I'm not sure if it's enough to keep a wall warm.
Stevo, can you think of any particular reasons why cubes are a pain outside of their zone? Either way, I can see the point that you and d0urd3n are trying to make -- I'm fighting nature with the cubes idea. I guess I'm curious though. Also, I'm pretty ignorant of what it would take to culture out a worthy strain...

To be honest bro after doing some ACTUAL research on what you plan to do I think it's POSSIBLE but you won't achieve great results. That box uses solar energy and plant heat to maintain the desired 2c it's supposed to bring. Myc qt jars put out about 1-5c temperature difference so this big colonizing bed will give off SOMETHING but idk if it's gonna be what you want.
My 2cents. I'm still gonna watch though, it's a great project, I just don't think you'll see a great pinset from the artificial weather.
