Rescue 911-Is it too late, Echinocereus pectinatus white mold
    #21152193 - 01/20/15 08:39 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

So, I think it is too late, this looks like #4 for my fallen friends.  Bought this guy back in September, "Echinocereus pectinatus rubrispinus Hedgehog Cactus".  I have had him in a window and have not been watering.  Stupidly I added the gravel less than a month ago to give him some flavor, and I am sure I introduced some kind of contaminate.  Since I dont touch him ever I didnt notice, as it was in the back side against the glass, but today I noticed the lower side/back portion indented.  As soon as I move him he kind of jiggles, like his insides are going, or gone.  If there is anything I can do let me know, but I assume he is a goner.

Luckily, I liked him a lot, so previously ordered and literally just received some seeds today, so I guess it will work out in the end, but if there is something I can do let me know, thinking of trying Hydrogen peroxide just to try something.  Searching brings up mealyworms, but I am sure its some kind of mold from the gravel, as I wasnt very through with cleaning it.  Lesson learned, no shortcuts.

Here you can see the mold

Here you can see it falling over, he did stand up straight.

I would get that thing as far away from your other plants ASAP. That White stuff will spread otherwise. If it's all wiggly at the base then it's rotting and there's not much you can do other than cut out the rot and re root, if that's even possible, or you will have to do an emergency graft onto some other cactus. I'd only do the latter if it's irreplaceable or of sentimental value. Otherwise bag it in plastic and throw it in the rubbish/trash/bin, whatever you call it in your neck of the woods...

Before deciding what to do with it you should up root it and inspect the roots and base of the cactus. I think it has root rot though, you'd have to confirm this.

Does the inside of the window have condensation on it in the mornings? I can see water droplets on the cactus and is why I ask. If so then it's not a good place for delicate species. Also windowsills can get awfully cold in Winter, especially at night, and can weaken or cause cold damage to certain species.

I put him outside right away, great tip though.  I never though of the condensation, but that is extremely possible, as I have noticed it on other windows at times lately as its been cold for Socal.  I am sure its rotted, but hasnt been watered in months, I will take a look at the roots tomorrow out of curiosity.  I had just sprayed/misted some seeds I have and think that is where the droplets are from, good eye:).  I am just gonna toss it, there's sentimental value but I dont want to mess with the mold, I will start with the seeds, and grow them in his honor.

Thanks for the info!

No problems. I still think you should dissect it, you'll learn from it....
