How high of a fall can ants survive?
    #21149242 - 01/20/15 11:14 AM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Always been curious of this. They seem to be a pretty tough little insect. Do you think an ant would survive being dropped from an airplane?

I'm curious.

I'm no expert but I'm going to say an indefinite one. They don't have a lot of mass, so it doesn't take a lot of height for them to reach their terminal velocity. I'm sure I've dropped ants from terminal height and seen them just walk away like it wasn't anything unusual. 10 feet or 10 miles, they hit the ground the same.

If this is true, I wonder when mass becomes a deadly factor in terminal velocity.

If they were dropped from a plane, I don't know that they'd survive the fall. They may not have a lot of weight, but there is bound to be a powerful impact relative to it's mass from such a height. I imagine it takes a lot less force to crush them with your finger. I am probably wrong, good question.

The terminal velocity of an ant would come nowhere near close enough to cause injury.

So I suppose a better question would be if a tiny ant were dropped out of an airplane at 30,000 feet would he still be alive by the time he hits the ground?

Probably unless it froze to death.  It would take hours and good luck finding the fucker.  The wind would probably blow it a thousand miles.

If rain doesn't kill them I doubt falling would.

Anyone have any information on the largest animal that can reach terminal velocity and then impact the ground with no deadly effects? Or even critical ones. At what size do animals lose the ability to just brush off a terminal velocity fall with no impact reduction (like snow).

I dropped a hamster once, and it was knocked silly for a few seconds.
