it means I'm (as a nonbeliever on average) significantly more compassionate than a typical Christian is towards terror suspects.

Better? depends on the criteria.

And yes, you've caught me. my lack of religion has somehow influenced the criticism I direct at religion.

Funny thing is that so many of you shroomery atheists can't keep your atheism to yourselves either...just like those religious folks. :smirk: I also find it amusing that so many atheists seem to believe that all scientists are atheists. Try telling Neil Tyson Degrasse that religious folks didn't bring anything to science, and he'll laugh you out of the room.

Neil Degrasse Tyson, and i agree with you Dark_Star, shit Einstein spent a hefty chunk of his life trying to disprove quantum mechanics because he said,"As I have said so many times, God doesn't play dice with the world."

One thing that annoys me about atheists is that they start arguments or talk trash about religion, and then go "You need to prove to me that God exists.  The burden of proof is on you!", when there really is no burden of proof at all.  It is an individual choice and there is nothing wrong with people drawing different conclusions.

This thread obviously is kinda making atheism into a religion.  Christianity does not need to be a religion either, it can be a personal thing.

1. Yes, there is a burden of proof. This is what we use to determine what's fact and what's fiction. If you want to believe in fiction, go ahead, but don't get butthurt when someone calls a spade a spade.

This is not a court of law this is something that people decide within themselves as a judge and jury of one.  You're free to ridicule that but if you're trying to say that you know anything for certain I'd be thinking you're just as crazy as the bible-bashers.  I'm not butthurt, I know more or less how the world works and have accepted it, I'm just stating my own opinion on the matter.
Quote:

2. Yes, beliefs are a choice. But to base beliefs on what amounts to nothing is ignorant and deserves criticism. If someone said "I don't think water is two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen. I believe it's actually carbon," they'd be laughed out of the building. The same applies to any belief, if it contradicts fact it should be ridiculed.

Are you trying to say that you should be the judge of what is true and what isn't, or that we should believe everything that is agreed upon by general consensus?  Are you aware that many scientests who are now very respected were ridiculed for their "beliefs"?  Are you aware that many of the people who discovered these things subscribed to religions?  Should we ridicule them?
Quote:

3. Who says religion can't be a personal thing? It's just that none of you fuckers can manage to keep it to yourselves. Maybe because the typical religious belief entails proselytizing, conversions, and killing apostates and infidels (or women or babies or sons or whoever happened to piss God off at whatever moment in time).  But there is room for people to be spiritual and experience transcendence without dogma.

Well, I guess you could look at it that way, but all the same you could look at atheism as religion.  Words and labels are not concrete things that give us any absolute certainty about anything, they are just words.  To me a religion necessitates some form of organization and shared beliefs, so one person practicing alone is not a religion to me.  That is one of the agreed upon definitions of religion.  Like how people say "I'm not religious but I'm spiritual" or similar things.

There is also room for atheists to be fascist assholes, so I don't really see what you're getting at.

There would be no need to criticize religion if it weren't for the fact that peoples beliefs DO influence their actions, outlook, their relations with other humans etc. 'Militant' atheists are just dicks. To my mind its got nothing to do with their lack of belief, and everything to do with being  a stuck up/insecure asshole.
I do think a lot of people could do with a little more logic and reality rather than faith in their lives. But if it doesn't bother anyone else, then fuck it, I don't give a shit. This however is a FORUM for discussion -as far as I am aware- and is utterly full of wishy washy faith based shit. Mostly in psychedelic experience though...

I've been here for a while and honestly the people are more reasonable than average I find.  Maybe I am just a sucker but I don't think it gets much better than this.  I wouldn't want all the religious or even new-agey people gone because some of them are pretty smart and good patient debaters, I enjoy the discussions even if I don't always agree.

Maybe I missed it here but I don't see anyone backing up any specific religion.  I consider myself agnostic, and honestly don't see why any reasonable person would think that they know these things for certain unless they actually had profound experiences which shaped their belief.  In that case I just have to take their word that they are genuine and tolerate it, but since I had my own experiences I draw my own conclusions.  Most people here seem to respect that and not get bend out of shape because I won't pledge allegiance to or disavow whatever God(s).

(oh yeah PE is a bunch of tripped out kids.  I stay out of there for the most part, you can find the other end of the spectrum on other subforums tho)

the idea here is opinions are stupid, and people sharing and communicating and having a good time doesn't include any of that bullshit. and yet so many threads are made for what? to bring all of everyone's opinions out of the woodwork, and then argue about them

sad thing it's the fucking way the world works because of stupid people.

I really enjoy PE actually, and reading about religion. I am sure in another time I would have been hardcore spiritual/religious no doubt. I love ritual and I love the architecture and arts associated with it all, and I love mysticism and whatnot, and I am a fairly intuitive person. So for me spirituality has a great appeal, but its a lot like the appeal of opiates -in my eyes-. If I could suspend my lack of belief, perhaps I would hedonistically embrace it, but alas, I'm just slightly too logical or whatever you wanna call it.
In my social circles though there's all of, two religious people... literally. So for me this place is comparatively swarming with believers ha

This isn't directed at anyone but I think some atheists think they are skeptics when they are more just contradictory.  Agnosticism is the religion of skepticism

I can see how atheism was necessary at one point to even create the middle ground of agnosticism, but personally I think the truth is all-inclusive, and I would like to be as close to the heart of truth as possible.

Lol agnosticism is the religion of skepticism. See, as an agnostic I don't get butthurt about being told my poisition is a religion, even if it has none of the characteristics of one. What does that say

nothing wrong with religion. i wonder why so many Atheists have a problem with being a religion. maybe it's because their beliefs is really what bugs them, and not their beliefs of their beliefs.
