Never knew pet stores had coir
Ive seen some coir from a local plant nursery. It looks pretty high quality.
Do guys prefer pet store coir or plant store coir?

get what your saying! i wouldnt want anything thats going to mold on me in my snakes tank(i use aspen bedding and never had a prob). snakes have a delicate resipitory system and cannot tolerate mold spores. i would report it to the company! maybe they sort their QC! im sure they would like to fix the problem if it was brought up with them, as thousands people use as bedding
i imagine that they would atleast apologise and maybe send out some free un-contaminated product

Wow. I've only ever had Eco Earth coir.
I thoroughly handle my coir when preparing it before I pasteurize/sterilize it, so it's probable that I would find a grain in it if there were one, and haven't seen one yet. But maybe there's still a chance that something to this effect is partially to blame for the ~40% failure rate I had with bulk substrates before I moved to mycobag blocks.
Can't help but wonder if this sort of difference is responsible for some people here having great success with coir and being able to get away with anything, but others having some daunting failures - shamed with such critiques as "your spawn IS bad" and/or "you're doing something wrong" - even under spawning conditions cleaner than what many people with regular success undergo (i.e. RR's "scratch your butt while spawning" statement).
I've talked to many people, most of them known and/or established growers, who have had similar poor odds with bulk. Wonder what coir they've used. Wonder what Invitro will think/say of this when he sees it. Wonder what brand of coir SBJ was using here http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/20993057#20993057

No no, just basic things that most people already do. Keep your bulk substrate covered while it cools, wash your hands thoroughly or wear gloves while spawning, spawn in a clean room where the floor has been swept and mopped so your not kicking up dust, wear clothes that are free of dust, stuff like that.
Not trying to say that your mold was a result of a lack of doing those things by any means. The real point I'm trying to make is just that no bulk substrate whether it's coir or straw or manure is going to be guaranteed completely free of small high nutrient particles. That's guaranteed by the fact you're spawning grains not to mention any tiny bits of uncolonized starch and grain fragments also present in the spawn. It's just a fact we have to accept that you're going to occasionally find weird shit in any substrate. And that we're already doing probably the best thing we can do to deal with that fact, using reasonably clean procedures. Sure finding a whole grain is kind of a shocker but it's not like that's the only weakness in an otherwise infallible substrate and it's certainly not a definite fail though if cleanliness has been maintained. Unless you're finding them all the time in your coir I don't think it's that out of the ordinary. I was finding occasional seeds in straw on a regular basis when I was using that but it still turned out fine.

I try to spawn to bulk in a room without ventilation and waiting some time for all the contams to fall to the floor "simulating a Still air box". Although i know some mold spores may land of the substrate when doing spawn to bulk.

The good thing about Trichoderma is under normal conditions it's usually not present much in indoor air other than what is stuck to relative large dust particle which settle easily. There are plenty of other molds spores floating around freely of course but they don't pose much of threat at this stage.

Lol I thought I was going crazy. I've successfully grown spontaneous plants a few times in monotubs.
I've always used Eco Earth and have had a few random trich patches appear in tubs from what I thought was immaculately clean spawn. Never thought anything of it as I just blamed bucket tek and moved on.
Eco Earth is all I have locally, is there a good online coir retailer thats reasonably priced?

in a perfect worlds maybe.. strong maybe...
you can contam at any stage, I dont care what has been said b4 about fully colonized spawn etc..
Ive done it so noone can say that as a blanket statement anymore..
if your in a fairly clean house etc, sure, but not everywhere is like that so caution must be taken at every stage.

I grow in a dirty infested nasty environment. Only contam I get is surface bacteria's from over misting and pooling of water on the surface. I am working on not misting so much but its just so hard of a habit to kick.
