How crucial is a guide to a positive, meaningful experience?
    #21137539 - 01/18/15 10:42 AM (9 years, 3 months ago)

The subject says it all. I've taken mushrooms in the past (1.75-3.5 grams), and have had what I consider to be pretty mild experiences, with lots of laughter and a generally good, refreshing feeling, but not so much personal insight or ego death/rebirth like what you sometimes hear people mention when they discuss their psychedelic experience.  Now, this could be because I took them without much intention in mind, in a group of me and some friends hanging out, or it could be because the dose was too low. The next time I take them though, I'm looking for a more meaningful trip.

I've read quite a bit about psychedelics used in a spiritual/therapeutic context, and one thing I've noticed is that whether they're being administered to someone in the jungles of South America by a shaman who's had 100s maybe thousands of years of tradition passed down to them, or they're being given to a volunteer by a doctor in a more modern therapeutic setting, there is someone present that has a lot of knowledge and experience with these drugs.

Unfortunately for me and probably a lot of other people, I don't have access to a person with that kind of experience or credentials - I do, however, have a good friend, a couch, and a great collection of music haha. So I guess what I'm asking is, what would be a good dose to take, and is it an alright idea in the first place for us to both be taking a powerful dose of psychedelics together without a proper 'guide' ? Would love to hear from you guys, but please, helpful responses only - we're not looking to just get fucked up/trip balls, we really would like to get something out of this (albeit, through getting fucked up and tripping balls lol). Thanks!

from my experience a guide isnt necessary. my first ego death it was just me and my brother. we both had an ego death, altho mine came on a lil sooner than his. granted wed both done shrooms a few times previously

its more about dose from what i can tell. 5g is usually enough to achieve it, altho ive been able to reach ego death with just an 1/8 but they  were pretty damn strong

I've never had a guide and honestly I would hate to have a sober person sitting there watching me while I trip. I much prefer tripping alone or with one or two other people who are tripping. Just remember to not leave the house and wander around tripping. That's not likely to happen anyway. It's more likely that you'll be afraid to leave the safe area. :loo:

Ditto that.  Guides are going to show up when you have some sort of clinical setting obviously, because otherwise what's the justification?  People could just take the substance and trip without being studied, but how would that employ those doing the study?  Same for the "shaman" guide, where do you extract payment if the drugs are basically free (we're talking mushrooms here ).

You could get yourself a spirit guide without much trouble.  Benefit of that is the spirit guide already exists where it is you pretty much want to go.  For that you'd want to study shamanic tek, spirit animals and the like.  It's not really very complicated.

As for the "knowledge and experience" in a "modern clinical setting", some of the most ridiculous stuff published comes from researchers who have obviously never tripped at all.  Is that something you'd want to be letting into your trip?  I sure wouldn't.  Trust yourself.

I have done mushrooms a few times but, like you, I have never had the ego death happen to me either.  I am going to get back into it for spiritual/mental journeys.  From what I have read for a true out of body/ego death you should take 5 dry grams of Psilocybe cubensis. Immediately after taking them you should sit in a comfortable chair or lay on a bed in a completely dark room with no noise.  A blindfold/sleeping mask and ear plugs might also be recommended. This is how I plan to take my next trip.

Good luck.
