Winter BLAHS

I has it.
I had like 2 weeks off at Christmas time, which sounds pretty sweet, but I got bored fast. Now I'm on a night shift which means I am up late and sleep in the mornings. I feel so lazy and slow. I feel like my whole life is in slow motion.
I know I'll get over it eventually, but I just feel so shitty right now. Professionally uninspired, sleeping too much, not eating the right healthy foods. It took me a couple of weeks to come to the full realization of what is wrong with me.
I got a hardcore case of the winter BLAHS and I can't wait for the sun to come out again. Things are pretty cold and grey lately.

Why not? Last I checked the winter weather doesn't decide what one shops for and puts in one's fridge.
Daylight (little as it may be in the winter) has a huge effect on mood. So does food. So does sex and massage. So does exercise. So does vocabulary, how we frame things in the mind or out the mouth.
Maybe you can't control working night shifts nor the fact that it's winter, but the whole rest of 'em is yours to command to your heart's content.
Hope you find ways to improve what can be improved, it makes a huge difference

I think what he is referring to is comfort foods, I am far from having a perfect diet normally, but when depression starts to kick in it goes completely to shit. so I can understand OP's struggle.
Now as for you OP, space made some valid points, as hard as it is when your facing depression, or even the winter blah's. its important to stay active and eat well, those two things alone will do wonders for your overall mood. I also find it helpfull to stimulate the mind, do something creative with your time, or if your not the creative sort, pick up a new skill... learn to rock climb (which doubles as taking care of physical activity), ever solve a rubix cube? make that your winter skill to learn. The trick is to make sure you don't slip into hybernation mode.

Yeah, I know it.
Get up, get moving, eat good food.
It really snuck up on me...I didn't realize it was happening until I was in the thick of it. Now I just have to find my way out.
Breathe deep, eat greens. I'm doing it.
Is it spring soon?

I'm a big believer in comfort foods, provided they're used right.
Like if things aren't going well (no hugs no sex no trips nothing special, just work and drudgery and not even sun outside) then here I come cake and chocolate. That's perfectly fine. I eat the sweeties, eat also the healthy foods the very same day (paying attention to have enough Omega 3 and fats so my brain has stuff to run on) and then whammo, crisit and apathy averted.
Where people tend to go really wrong with comfort foods is that they eat them, and then instead of enjoying, eating more healthy food and putting in some movement to burn the calories, they just go and give themselves guilt trips about having eaten the sweets and cakes. Terrible waste of money, calories, good vibes, everything.
OP, if you're digging in the ice cream bucket, don't worry about it at all. Throw in a few pushups and runs up the stairs, change your computer chair or couch with an exercise ball to bounce on as you computerize, and that's it right there, guilt free fun.

It'll probably be a while, take decisive action now, make your own spring

It's been almost a month since the solstice, so daylight has been returning. Only a few more weeks and it should be noticably brighter. Fear not, spring is on it's way.

What hours do you work? I ask because when I worked nights I found that if I slept from about 3pm to 11pm (work at 12), then I'd get to see most of the beautiful, sunny daytime when I got off work at 9am. Maybe try switching your sleep schedule to do something similar...if sunshine's your thing

Sending you some warmth, light & love from zee South -

After living my entire life in the North East, I am so happy to be experiencing this mild type of winter. I highly recommend it. The summers blow though.
