My Coir suspicion confirmed * 4
    #21141340 - 01/18/15 08:47 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

So I just finished casing a coir tub and made a discovery that seems to confirm my suspicions about coir, and contams. As I was smoothing the casing I discovered a round brownish object. Curious I picked it out and found a plump grain. Not sure what kind of grain but a grain of some kind nonetheless. Fuck!

So this has got me thinking about coir, the possibility of poor quality control and what factors might be involved. So I usually use pet store bricks for casing with, as I like the texture better. But the last couple of months I was unable to get the Exo Terra that I prefer, and was stuck getting eco earth which I find has a greater chance of finding rocks, sticks and straw. Well now I found a grain in it too. Coincidentally (or maybe not) I had recently had two tubs contam during pinning that I had no reason to suspect were off. The contam was also localized and not spread throughout, which leads me to think that it was not the spawn persay.

So I am now quite certain that it is the crappy eco earth product. I will no longer be using it for anything but bottle subs from now on. I certainly have not had the same issue with the coir from the hydro shops or the Exoterra. Anyone got any thoughts on my discovery?

I am also extra pissed as that tub was for a grow log I was doing, hopefully there are no other random bits of detritus that will cause it to contam.

This makes me sad that all I have at my petco is Eco earth.

ME TOO, this is the brand I have been using Pasty, and every fucking time, contam, and as I stated before, I did not understand how you were always saying that sawdust contams easy, and I only had a problem 1x, but using the coir, EVERY FUCKING TIME!

Yeah its pretty shitty quality control for sure. I mean I'm just glad I never used any of it for my snakes or nothing, shit would have been a mold fest for the poor guys.

I think I have a way around this but I need a few months to experiment. In the meantime, check your eco earth coir carefully. Even proper pasteurization which might help with straw or wood debris, won't do shit to save ya if there is grains in it.

I mentioned something about this a few days ago.  It's been pissing me off too.  I haven't seen any crazy contams yet but I have a feeling I will, since I got a sprout in one of my tubs.

Should I look for a hydro store to source my coir then?

Might be an idea. They might supplement with trich but that is a lot easier to deal with IMO. Cheaper too. I usually am sure to sterilize any coir I get from the hydro shop but I have a pretty good track record with it and I use it for most of my bulk. I just like the pet store bricks to case with.

Well fuck.  Does anybody know of a clean coir source that's not trich treated OR full of totally random shit?

All coir is swept off a factory floor....it will all have random shit in it, to a degree...also it shouldn't matter if there is trich in it or not, when we spawn we mix millions of contams into the substrate reguardless....

Could just pasteurize?

The mushroom speaks: '"I am old, older than thought in your species, which is itself fifty times older than your history. Though I have been on earth for ages I am from the stars. My home is no one planet, for many worlds scattered through the shining disc of the galaxy have conditions which allow my spores an opportunity for life... How the hypercommunication mode operates is a secret which will not be lightly given to man. But the means should be obvious: it is the occurrence of psilocybin and psilocin in the biosynthetic pathways of my living body that opens for me and my symbiots the vision screens to many worlds"

Pasteurizing doesn't work on grains, and that's the main issue with this.

While I agree with this, trich is easily killed and not really an issue provided you heat treat it in some manner, my main concern is the presence of things that present contam vectors. I have no delusions that coir is a product with high quality control but, I have found more crap in the 6 eco earth bricks I have used recently than in all the other coir I have used combined.

I have never had a problem with ecoearth coir used it for every tub. Granite I'm not very expirenced and I did loose two tubs due to bacterial problems but that was something on my end I believe but maybe I could be wrong but now I'm using it again it is working amazingly once again. I usually buy the three pack from petco and this brick is from the same batch as my 2 bacterials. I guess I'll play it out and see how things go.

SOOO..... I'm guessing it would be better to sterilize coir?

To be honest I don't think it matters. A grain in your coir is gonna fuck yer shit up regardless of if you pasteurize or sterilize. Just heat treat it. I am slowly coming to the conclusion that a really high spawn ratio is desirable in order to overwhelm any vectors like this. It certainly would not be foolproof, but would hedge your bets so to speak. I know that no brand is going to be foolproof. But I don't think I will be using the eco earth again.
