Bulk Trays to SGFC,sub questions
    #21139787 - 01/18/15 04:34 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

I have a SGFC,quarter inch holes spaced two inches apart in a grid pattern, and 3.5 inches of perlite. humidity and temperature stay lovely even if I am gone for a little over a half day. I am just not getting enough out of my cakes, and I am not with supplies for a mini monotub just yet.
I seem to remember a friend fruiting a few small trays in his SGFC before he had his monotubs going, and I'd like to try the same.

I'm going to pick up plastic trays instead of aluminum. Tupperware deep enough for at least 3-3.5 inches of substrate. I believe I can get three in mine without covering up all of the perlite. I plan to elevate the trays a bit to keep more perlite exposed if necessary. Not going to worry much about the trays until I pick them up.

My biggest questions are about the bulk substrate to add my spawn to. I have a bit over 3 quarts of Koh Samui colonizing in the half pint BRF jars. I am short on cash due to school,so I am kind of limited to just vermiculite, gypsum, cow poo, and MAYBE coir. The coir is out of town though. I have never had any contams, and I just have the large and nicely closing stock pot. I can't recall if it was Shea25 or Frank with pastuerizing with a meat thermometer on the stove or not...But I can place the cow poo in oven bags and zip tie them and keep them at about 150-160 for 90 minutes, while monitoring the temp with the meat thermometer. I was thinking of trying a 50/50 poo/verm ratio, with a bit of gypsum added to the verm.

Are the verm and gypsum ok with the cow poo around this ratio? Or do I have to go through the trouble of getting coir for the mix?

In the event I have to get coir, can I mix it with the cow poo before pastuerizing on the stove,or must it be pastuerized separately for whatever reason?(people bitch about contams and get us scared)

I'm not looking to make many large trays right now, just enough to put maybe 2 quarts of spawn or a little less into because of my space at the moment. If you have useful and relevant links to throw my way, that is cool too. Searching from this phone is awful.

Or just send Pussyfart in to save the day. He usually sets me straight

coir is just more forgiving than manure when it comes to the pasteurization,
just use the bucket tek for prepping coir,
or prep the manure+verm as you described it yourself!

Thanks for chiming in  you mean "forgiving",as in less prone to contaminate? I am probably going to use a 2:1 sub to spawn ratio,so I was hoping this wouldn't be a big issue with small to medium sized trays.

yes and forgiving as in temps really doesnt matter as long as you cook it.
temps rise really fast in my stock pots even after I kill the heat, pay attention when working with manure!

I'd go closer to 1:1 when using cakes as spawn, they are already 2/3's verm
and cow manure needs lot of verm (50/50) to not make it so muddy..

Thanks for that bit.

I planned on shutting off the flame once the temp hits 125 or 130. I figure that the glass of quart jars will retain heat and continue to get hot for a bit. If I do it in the oven bags,I'll just stand around the stove for an hour.

As for coir. If I did a coir and verm substrate with gypsum, how do they perform next to manure in terms of yield? I usually eat 5 or 6 grams at a time, brothers are the same, and I'm aiming for above the ceiling if possible. If they are around the same,I'll just stick with my free cow poo.

I've never seen any difference in yields between coir or manure
some will disagree I know, but... this is my opinion. they will say manure gives better yields tho!

I turn my heat off after core temps has risen maybe 10 degrees over room temp, put on the lid and watch the temps rise FAST!

My first times pasteurizing I had to take the pot off the oven and throw in some cold water because temps were rising too fast, just babysit it and you'll be fine and learn how its done in your situation/conditions!

Nah, no need for any ratings, I'm just glad to help with my exp and telling new culters what the fall pits might be.

I'd hate for this guy to overcook his manure when it takes me half a minute to type out !"dont do it"

glad to have helped Xochi! I think Franks pasteurization tek says something along the lines of what I'm saying.
kinda surprised this is the best advice you've gotten, there's quite a few "hidden" gems in the search engine! :yesnod:

Planned on it,but as you should already know,I don't have 50 posts to do so. I usually find out 90% of what I need by lurking and don't accumulate posts quickly.

So later on eh. Not like he'll be forgotten:smile:
