    #2113740 - 11/17/03 01:15 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Everybody uses it. But im not sure why. Lets say i had that HIgh mountain compost, should i use that stuff alone or some kind of mix with straw. I guess im just confused as to the benefits of straw.

to my knowledge, straw is used primarrily for its speed of growth. from the books i've read, and my experiences, straw is an EXTREMELY fast substrate. from what I know, this is because the particle size, plus the inside of the straw tubes allows mycelium to have perfect conditions... plus, the nutrients in straw are readily available and easy for the mycelium to digest.

the downside to all this, is, of course, reduced lifespan. a standard poo/straw will last 3-4 flushes... contrast that with a friend of mine who got 7 months out of straight poo... I'm not positive what his yeilds were, but forseven months... it couldn't have been shabby.

Straw is just another bulk substrate. You can spawn to it alone, or mix it with poo. Alone, it usually only produces 1 or 2 impressive flushes and then craps out. As schorts said, some people like to mix it with poo to speed colonization. It is also good for loosening up compacted, dense poo and it's good for bulking up your substrate in general. The downside is that it doesn't last very long and it contaminates a little bit more easily than poo.
