they look great to me. keep them in a humid environment. why did you open the bag? usually people who make straw logs cut a couple holes in the bag a couple weeks after inoculation and the pins come out through the holes. i haven't done pearl oysters. just regular ostreatus, kings, and columbinus

Yea they colonized great but they started pinning while the bag was closed so i thought i could open the bag to give them enough oxygen and they would grow out the hole. I did put an elastic band around it to make the hole smaller. Is that a good idea or should i close it up again and cut holes near wheres its pinning already.

i've always had trouble when they pin in vitro. try putting the bag back over and cutting a hole but be gentle. if you can't do it without hurting the pins, just leave it. do what u gotta do

At this point I would leave it. I would worry that putting the plastic back on at this point would cause aborts or at the very least longer stems dew to the drop in fresh air.

They get dark then just shrivel up and don't grow anymore.

Could be a few reasons why your getting pins under your plastic. Maybe strain related but most likely because your straw isn't packed anywhere near tight enough. Any air pockets made from loosely packed sub is gonna be prime territory for pins to start where you don't want them to.

Try packing your straw way tighter and poking "x" slits into the plastic and straw after you've tied them off and before they colonize.  That bag looks a little bit wet, so include a few holes in the bottom to help drain off extra water during colonization. Also don't spawn your straw until you don't notice any visible surface moisture on it.

You need way more fresh air, thats why your getting little caps and long stems.

Good luck on those. Pearls are some of my favorite oysters.
