Best time to harvest
    #21133541 - 01/17/15 12:43 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

[THIS POST IS CONSIDERING USING A MONOTUB TEK NOT PFTEK]

So usually i like to harvest at the last point of no return before you start to see raining spores. i like to let them grow as big as i can before i harvest. but this one thing i keep thinking I'm harvesting incorrectly and causing my substrate to contaminate while i do so, a few years ago i found a few posts showing different ways to pick your harvest and the correct time to pick

in my experience:

(THIS IS PRETTY MUCH A CONTROVERSAL POST; IM TRYING TO GET SOME MYCOLOGIST OPINIONS/EXPERIENCES ON WHEN YOUR BEST TIME TO HARVEST IS)

[BEST TIME TO HARVEST?]

1. pick the mushies when they veil hasn't broken if you have a good even large pin set coming cuz then you don't lose much yield or weight on the dry side, but I've heard that they potency will be a little more concentrated before the veil breaks.

2.I ve also heard that #1 is some what a myth considering two things(1. if you did multispore, 2.clone/culture)
I've heard that potency won't really change on the maturity of the mushroom.

3. Pick the mushrooms once the cap is fully poked out on over 70% of the mushrooms and then start flush 2.

-------------------------------

[BEST WAY TO HARVEST]

1.Use a scapel. sterlize it down with iso, wear gloves and whatever protective wear, spray lysol in the room, turn off all fans and any air movement to avoid all possible contamination rates. and whatever other procedures you partake in for you own paranoia of sterilization. I'm pretty paranoid of con tams, its my enemy so sometimes i like to dress up in all tyvek painter suits like I'm in a hazmat doing mad science lab work:crazy2::syringe::mushroom2::mygoditsfullofstars:

And the way I've used a scapel to harvest is, flame sterilize your scapel, let it cool down completely first, AND ALWAYS SO YOU DONT BURN YOUR MYCE OR KILL IT IN ANY WAY OTHER THAN CUTTING IT and then try to cut as LOOOOOW  as possible to the substrate without cutting too deep. and just cut every shroom in the box whether the veil is not broken or not, so you can have a fresh flush on flush 2 with no harvest halfway through to get the left over one that were half size not fully matured.

now here is a picture of my mushrooms up to date…

2.Ive also heard you can just twist and pull the whole mushrooms from the substrate trying the best you can not to pull any substrate out of the box with the bottom of the mushroom that you are pulling on. and just do that for all of them

here is the controversial part I'm trying to figure out..

when I've picked my mushrooms sometimes they start the turn blue(bruising?) around the parts i cut or pick, I've read that this is only bruising if your lucky but I've also read other myco experiences where people have seen trich form from it and it just looking bad.. anyone got any help on when i should harvest these guys? I'm thinking within the next day or two

I've also noticed some blue/greenish/black/spores looking color on the TOP of the cap towards the more mature end of the mushrooms. I know that your supposed to see black/dark purple colors around the stipe and veil when it pops cuz of spores being dropped but the mushrooms, but I've noticed my last two grows the black/blue/green/purplish color has been on the top my my mushrooms, and one grow I've completed did that A LOT and i ended up getting trich:(  this is the link to the other grow that has pictures of the colors on the tops of the caps rather than the bottom.. check it out..

The black just looks like it had spores dropped on it, nothing serious.

You have to feel the mushroom. Some you can touch and twist gently and they come out and others if you try that method you'll rip a chunk of substrate out. I only get the scissors if I can't cleanly extract the mushrooms.

I harvest as soon as the veil tears. Your mushrooms aren't losing actives when the veil tears, they're just gaining water weight. I wait until it actually tears though, no matter how small the tear.

I was watching a show about mushrooms. How they make there own weather to spread there spores. You mostly likely known but I thought it's pretty neat.

So your saying that when a veil pops it could've combusted spores everywhere rather than dropping them like seeds from a plant.i…. i just don't see how they could end up on top of the cap rather than on the stipe or the substrate…

Alsp should i pick all the mushrooms or only the ones that are ready

Spores are very light, the most minute currents of air caused by the heat rising from your substrate will carry them very far.

Here's a good article on the way spores spread

That's how they get on top because they make their own wind. So they can spread their own spores.

As for picking them, I pick the ones that are ready. Go ahead pick them bad boys.

The pressure of the spore sac(sporangium) exploding and the natural air current.

Mushrooms CAN NOT produce wind.

Read the link above it tells you how it makes wind.

My answer was accurate. Natural air flow in combination with the spore sac exploding causes the spores to travel. In a micro-climate. The mushrooms themselves create an artificial air current due to evaporation.

Grass, plants and trees all do the same thing due to temperature differentials. Can they produce an air current? Yes, can they produce wind? No. If that were the case, wind farms would be littered with mushrooms to increase optimal performance.

before harvest. i aimed at getting the mushrooms with the veil completely cherry popped or popped just still holding on a little . here are some pics

after harvest… not sure if i should pull anymore or not?

I left the bigger one to the right of the box because it had a immature mushroom stuck to it and the veil on the bigger mush was still attached. so we will see how it matures together with its siamese twin
