Back to the roots -- organic mushroom mini farm
    #21025440 - 12/25/14 05:12 PM (9 years, 4 months ago)

My girlfriend got me this for Christmas. It's basically a big oyster cake in a box. There are instructions for fruiting it on the box. The instructions on the box and a TC here told me to fruit it in open air, but I was wondering how to get the maximum amount of mushrooms from it since I want to take a clone and some prints. Should I just cut a side of the bag off and fruit it like a tray? I've grown cubes but I'm a complete novice with eddies.

Oh, and I'm guessing I should dunk the cake too, huh? I was thinking about fruiting it in a SGFC but if I can do it in open air that would be easier. I do my cubes in monotubs so I currently have no SGFC and not much space for one.

I had pretty good luck with the instructions on the box...peeling a panel off one of the perforated panels, cutting an X on one side of the bag through the hole in the box you made, remove bag from box & submerge for 24 hours, putting it back in the box with its back facing a window (I assume for additional warmth) and mist 2x a day...waiting for my second flush now...

After that I was thinking I could break up the cake and inoculate some other stuff around the house (cardboard, tp, etc)

It would be really sweet to spawn it to old shopping bags or newspapers. I think I'm gonna cut the bag open inside my SAB and put a piece of the cake on agar. What else can you tell me about the mushrooms? Do they produce spores?

So this thing fruited pretty well!  I've been told that after I harvest the mushrooms I can expand the substrate and get more flushes. I have a 2 gallon bucket that I was thinking of using.

My plan was to drill some 1 1/2" holes in the side of the bucket, line it with a trash bag, and spawn the block to layers of cardboard inside the bucket. Then when it's fully colonized could I just cut the trash bag and fruit out of the side of the bucket?

You can indeed do this, and you should indeed do this. You are correct in your thinking, just make sure to sterilize or pasteurize your cardboard.

Oh definitely. I've been reading some related threads and seen them done in plastic shopping bags too. My plan was to just cut up little squares and strips of cardboard and steam them in my PC with the thermometer probe in the water, killing the heat at 150 and letting them sit until they're hydrated, then spawn the substrate to that after it's cool. It seems like senescence isn't nearly as big an issue with oysters as it is with cubes, and that the mycelium is a lot more aggressive. It seems like oyster mycelium is extremely easy to expand and will eat damn near anything. I live right by a retail strip mall and there's unlimited cardboard. Something about growing delicious mushrooms on waste paper is very appealing.

the second flush on mine was really ho-hum - probably because I was lazy and didn't cut and scrape the other side for the second flush.

I acquired an empty (2 gal?) plastic jar that once held pretzels from work and drilled twelve 1/2" holes in it (and some water drainage holes on the bottom).  I have this huge roll of brown paper (kraft paper?) - I fed to my blender several loads with water to make a pulp (that looks just like my dog's poo when having a bad day) - drained & squeezed as much water as I could out of them and put them in a pot with a lid in the oven for 1.5 hours at 300 degrees and has been sitting in there since then to better utilize the carry over heat and to cool down (yeah I should have used hot water and had the oven at 160 degrees - but was tired last night and just wanted to get it done - hopefully the amount of spawn to substrate will allow it to over come the possible trich contamination :undecided:)

Mixing it together tonight and putting it in the plastic jar - hopefully will have good news in a few weeks :-)

I hadn't planned on letting this kit go for a second flush. The block is pretty good sized, and it's great that I can expand it. I definitely think it's a good strain of mushroom, but oysters are voracious eaters and I think I'd have better luck growing these on more substrate. I keep hoping the agar plates I made with one of the fruits work out. I'd love to blend one up and inoculate a spawn bag full of dowel plugs. I have some old cottonwood logs that I'd like to try and inoculate.

Well, just a little update. The cardboard bucket I spawned with the sawdust block is pretty much fully colonized. I'm fruiting it early next month after it's had some time to consolidate.

What's more surprising is that the clone I took is really eating up the agar now. I'm gonna drop a wedge into a grain jar and see what happens. I set up a mini greenhouse that I think will be great for oysters in bottles.
