Fruit Pectin + Grain Water = culture dish

Yup, Got some grain water and am adding some fruit pectin to solidify the mix for making some culture dishes. Why? Availability. Grain water is a free by-product and fruit pectin is available everywhere. Just got 1.75 oz for under 2 bucks. I wonder how acidic this will be.

I wont be able to get this to solidify or I wont be able to get anything to grow? I figured 2 bucks and 5 min of my time would be okay to try.

So I want to try some Grain Water agar. Do I just use it like it was the water and add agar?

Yeah. Just like Violet has showed. I have yet to try but I see no reason why he would be lying or why the recipe would not work. I'm hoping to get some agar going. Obviously I got some real agar in the mail but in the meantime I can play with this fruit pectin. I have a really cool idea for the pom tek and I hope I can get it to work. It will look so cool.

I dilute my grain water, personally.

I see no reason to dilute grainwater. According to some of my recent tests, it is already likely to have lower nutritional material than recipe preparations. Not that it appears to be a drawback in any way. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21119913#21119913

Neither. Fungi can produce pectinases, but nobody really talks about it because there's nothing special about being able to break down pectin. 76% of basidiomycetes out of 75 saprobic species were shown to be able to do it, and so are countless molds. If you ever have any aspergillus, trichoderma, schizophyllum and maybe even psilocybe (which to my knowledge has never been tested for pectinase although Agrocybe, its cousin genus, is known to produce it) it'll turn into a puddle. If you ever have any bacteria at all it'll turn into a puddle. There's a very good reason we don't use gelatin or pectin for solid media.

So just pour 500 ml of this stuff with 10 grams of agar?
Ignore it if the ratio is off, you know what I mean.

Yeah that's right. I typically make them in batches, .5g agar-agar per a 25mL grainwater container. (tho sometimes as little as .4g and 20mL, works fine)

Maybe, like me, you won't ever turn back. I've stuck with grainwater (brown rice or grass seed) for ALL my dishes for at least 20 months. Even edibles cultures such as Shiitake, multiple Oysters, Reishi, and others!
If it can grow on grain, it can grow on grainwater agar.

I turn back frequently. Not that I have any problem with grainwater agar at all--it's by far my favorite. But with the disclaimer that I haven't seen much evidence substantiating it, and that I'm just taking the advice of Stamets and Holiday, I do believe that if the price of possibly staving off senescence is frequent media changes, I'm willing to pay it. I know that the latter is able to keep his cultures going for a long, long time. And if they're wrong, maybe it'll keep me from getting bored a little longer.

That is a good reason to do so. I alternate grainwater agar occasionally, at least.
