Indeed.

In fact, to stretch the rye supply, the Red Milo is primarily what's used in grainmaster jars.  Said grainmasters containing colonized Red Milo are then transferred using grain to grain transfers into receiving bags of sterilized rye.  Rye does best at at fruiting for two major reasons.  1.  Size of grain.  The larger the grain the more moisture it can hold and release at fruiting time.  2.  Nutrition level of grain.  Rye is the most nutritious of all grain choices we can use in this hobby.  The more nutritious the medium is, the slightly slower the mycelium will take to colonize it which is almost always made up for at fruiting time.

I agree with the moisture content of rye mentioned above and have said so many times. Rye ftw

Nah, for real though.  For one, the more food that's available to the mycelium during culturing (the colonization of culturing media such as agar, liquid media, and master culture slants), colonization (grain spawn running), and spawn run (colonization of the bulk substrate) causes the mycelium to NOT have to reach out so fast in search of food, hence the slightly slower colonization rate of highly nutritious media.

Second, a mushroom's food source is the nutrient laden moisture that evaporates from the substrate.  The higher the nutritional content of the substrate, the more nutrients are in the evaporated moisture coming from the substrate, the more nutrients that laden the moisture evaporating from the substrate, the more food is made available for the fruit bodies to absorb resulting in stronger, healthier the fruits.

:mindexpanding:

Full colonization of the grain substrates has been reached as of about yesterday.

Figured since the idea of this particular grain water liquid culture was spawned by PastyWhyte, and I that it was deemed appropriate to spawn this grain spawn into 27 quart, minimono tubs, Pasty's favorite style of fruiting chamber.  This is a great opportunity to develop research of these tubs, simultaneously.

The minimonos are purchased and modified into fruiting chambers.

Haven't decided yet how much spawn and bulk that's going to be used per tub, or if there will be various substrate depths experimented with.  Most likely the varying substrate depth option.  The substrate will be comprised of horse manure/coir/vermiculite/gypsum.  Maybe some spent coffee grounds.  We'll see.

The diluted high quality Red Milo liquid medium is colonizing right away.  Barely see through, colonization can be observed, as well as being able to see clearly through the murky medium, so long as you focus.

Can't even BEGIN to see through the non diluted culturing media, so not sure if any thing is going on in there, but hope isn't abandoned on this culture yet..

There is a lot of LC projects going on at once.

LC MANIA!

More to come.

Is bacillus common with grain grows? How would you even identify that versus colonizing mycelium?

More common then most people know.

Normally a wet spot against the grain. It's also called Wet Spot contam. If you search you'll find plenty of pictures or look in my log. You'll see fully colonized grains with a bunch of uncolonized spots where the grains are pressed against the glass.

Ham, What should I be looking for in the LC? I have something growing in the bottom of my jar. Looks white and fluffy. I'm sure they are contamed. I knocked up with MS 10 days ago.

White and fluffy is good.  Let's see it (pics?).  More of your questions may be gone over here as The Visual Signs Of A Contaminated Liquid Culture are discussed in further detail.

I will get some up. I also did not dilute the grain water. Something is growing for sure.

Here is a pic after a few days. Do you see those white flakes on top? weird.

The flakes have not grown but their is something growing on the bottom of the jar.
