Lot's of dumb noob questions.

Howdy all.

So after reading and watching all this PF Tek stuff that you experts have so kindly directed me to, I have still a few unanswered questions. I have seen some people growing their shitakes in tanks, like hamster tanks, then using some sort of small ball looking things to coat the bottom (don't remember what they're called, and putting water in it and using a water pump. And I've seen other people putting cakes in bags. Not really sure what exactly kind of plastic these are made of or where to buy them.

Which method do you guys prefer? Or do you prefer a completely different fruiting method altogether?

And if it is the bad method, would those cellophane bags they sell at craft stores work just as well as long as the bag is opened and the air is changed daily?

I've also been reading that if you are able to get some fruiting off of a contaminated cake they are still okay to eat. So why is it so mad if they get contaminated? Could this potentially ruin a grow or something? Still haven't really found an exact reason why. I think I read something like that the bacteria could get in your house and make you sick. Is that the only hazard?

And another question, can i stack the jars on top of each other in the pressure cooker while the sterilize so I can to more at a time or is this unacceptable?

Thanks.

Best to fruit cakes in a shotgun style (SGFC) fruiting chamber. That expanded clay pebbles with pumps and all that shit is better fit for horticultural uses... Not really good for mycology. The bags you are seeing are specifically for myco purposes, they have to be bought from a mycology supply place. You don't want contams blasting off tons of spores in your house because it will affect your future grows. A lot of the times your subs won't even fruit because of a contamination. Finally... Yes you can load as many jars in your PC as it will hold.

I am also a newb with only a few grows under my belt.

My advice, for what it is worth, is watch "Let's Grow Mushrooms" 4 parts available on YouTube. Follow them exactly. If you want to learn more than PF Tek buy the whole series for less than $10. Spend some time reading teks from experienced growers. Learn to use the search function keeping in mind that there is outdated info and even outright wrong info on the boards.  Look for the TC tag on posters. While many growers without the tag really know what they are talking about, the tag helps someone new to the boards identify knowledgable posters.

My understanding is that contaminated substrate does not fruit as well. The mycelium is using some of its energy fighting the contamination.  You also do not want the molds growing because they will throw off more spores, making it more likely that future grows become contaminated.
