Triple P's Sand Castle Tek 2

So here is what I'm working on. I thought about this tripping balls this past weekend. I like to call it My Sand Castle Tek because it reminds me of making sand castles on the beach as a kid. This is a work in progress and not sure of the results so we will all be along for the ride I guess.
Triple P's Sand Castle Tek
Material needed for main sub: * 1 brick of coir * 2qts of vermiculite * 1/2 pint of gypsum * 4 1/2qts of water for field capacity * 5qts of spawn * 66qt monotub
Materials needed for solo cup sub: * 1/4 brick pof coir * 1/2qt of vermiculite * 1/4 cup of gypsum * 1100ml of water for field capacity * 1qt of spawn * 6 large solo cups
Main Substrate
The main sub is just your basic monotub substrate, pasteurized coir, vermiculite and gypsum mixed in the tub with 5qts of spawn. I"m not going to go into details or post pictures of spawning the tub or pasteurizing because we obviously all know how to do it. I save some bulk for a top layer after spawning but it is not needed. Once you have your main sub mixed and leveled out in your tub, place the lid on the tub and move on to mixing your materials for the solo cups. Do not add the top layer yet.

Solo Cup Substrate
Again the coir, vermiculite and gypsum is pasteurized (done at the same time you pasteurize your main bulk sub). "save 1/2 of a solo cup of bulk
and set aside before mixing with spawn" You can probably combine all the materials for the main sub and solo cups together when pasteurizing, I just prefer to keep mine in separate buckets to eliminate any guess work. Take your quart of broken up spawn and pour it in the bucket along with the coir, verm, gypsum and mix it together.
In your 6 solo cups, place a 1/2" of bulk from the 1/2 cup you saved into the bottom of each cup
then fill the rest of the cups to the rim with your mixed substrate/spawn and just tap it on the table very lightly to pack it down a little.
Now take these cups to the monotub and place the cups on your sub upside down so the mouth of the cups are sitting on the sub.
Arrange the cups however you like. After placing the cups upside down on your sub you can now add the top layer if you use one. Do not remove the cups for a few days to give the mycelium time to recover and knit things together a little bit so they hold up and dont fall apart. This will add quite a bit of surface area for fruiting without taking up any extra space in your grow area. More cups can be used to increase yields even more or to accommodate larger tubs, just change the formula to fit your needs. Follow your basic colonizing and fruiting temps/times for a monotub. Enjoy!

Update 36hrs after spawn, I was also able to remove the cups after 24hrs

Even if it ends up more work than it's worth and doesn't increase yield, it'll still be pretty sweet to see some "sandcastles" growing shrooms.

When I saw the title I thought you were gonna use one of those l little sand castle molds. Still cool tho, I hope it works.

Really wasn't a whole lot more work really, especially if you mixed both together in 1 bucket. Then its basically just a matter of filling solo cups and placing them on the sub. I'll tell you though, it was kinda tricky getting the last couple cups flipped over and in place without the sub falling out of them. Gotta do it kinda quick. I hope it increases yield which by theory it should, but even if it doesn't, it will probably make a pretty sweet picture for the novelty grow thread

well PPP. since you are doing this sandcastle tek. id like to see the next trial be a big giant substrate grown in the shape of a sandcastle. i think that would be the best picture ever of fruiting off of a castle shape lol
