It looks like the remnants of a large puffball after spore release - but not the true giant puffball as there is clearly a sterile base left behind, possibly with surface scales. Some of the Hankea species, e.g. Handkea utriformis (=Calvatia utriformis) which can grow very large, leave remnants like this, with a characteristically splitting edge (peridium). Very hard to get an exact species ID from this photo, but the habitat looks quite distinct, maybe someone will find a clue in that...
H. utriformis looks like this - http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Handkea_utriformis.html some I found last month -

whait till you see the next weird ones.
hummm, I'm no expert in identifying mushrooms but I've been in the spot the earlier days and I didn't see any kind of puffball, nevertheless I saw one that was bright(live yellow/orange) that you kick or simple push it hard and it transforms in a total yellow cloud(authentical pulverization)but it left no remnants.
it's possible that we're talking about 3 different species here, but hey, I can just identify some Amanitas and some Psilocybe. heheh
be well...
