Swami's Spirituality Class - Exercise #1
    #2111955 - 11/16/03 05:30 PM (13 years, 21 days ago)

This exercise is from a previous post: A Healing Experiment

EXERCISE #1

"Sit in a chair in a dark, quiet area. Do some deep, slow breathing and attempt to quiet your mind of daily trivia. Once settled, picture the person that you most hate in the entire world sitting directly across from you. Someone that has deeply wronged you. Someone that you wish was never born. That person who you would like to see die a horrible, painful death. No denial here. Don't pretend that you are too nice for these types of primal thoughts. Complete honesty is required. Feel the intense hatred. Once your emotions have peaked...

Now forgive that person for every real and imagined hurt ever done to you. Send that person waves of light, warmth and love. This will initially be impossible. Examine your blockages and thoughts. Stay with it. Believe me you will resist doing it even on an imaginary level. This may take several sessions to complete. When you can honestly send loving thoughts with no judgement or reservation then you will have cleared some major emotional knots."

All participants are required to do this once weekly, but only do one person per session. If you have already done it before, do it again today. We all need to regularly clean this up. DO NOT rush through this, then say now what? The deeper you go, the more you reap.

1. Before starting, buy a notebook only for this purpose or setup a word processor program for collating your ideas. All entries must be dated. Now I want you to write down the person who you most hate and why. Give detailed reasons. Give a 1 to 10 rating on your level of enmity, with 1 being "you wish he / she was to burn for all eternity and 10 being mild irritation.

2. Now do the exercise. Allow 10 to 30 minutes of uninterrupted time with no distractions.

3. Now give a 1 to 10 rating on your level of enmity after completing the exercise. Write down your feelings. Were you somewhat successful? rite down what issues you still cannot deal with. DO NOT judge yourself. Move at your own pace.

You MUST document ALL of these exercises for the changes will be slow and only in looking back will we see how far that we have come.

Well I tried...but such a person does not exist.

Sorry Swami, I don't hate anyone :smirk:

Like a splinter in your mind...
Driving you mad.

Try Tong-len, trendal. It's a great compassion-generating meditation for those who are not prone to feelings of hatred.

This is a good exercise Swami. It reminds me of an exercise an old art professor of mine suggested. He said to sit in a dark place, practice slow breathing then recount every person you have ever met in your life... really try to remember all the people you have come across.

At the time, it made no sense and seemed impossible. Now, I understand that the exercise is really meant to help face those people and situations that have left some sort of negative, emotional baggage within our selves.

I will certainly try this.

We all have emotional blocks. If no one comes to mind then practice on forgiving yourself for childish actions, poor choices, regrets, etc.

so what results are you looking for swami?
You want me to ruin the surprise?

Think of your average person as a incandescent light bulb with energy scattered all over. Now think of a Master as a laser beam who is able to focus tremendous energy on whatever task is before him.

Much of our energy of is disspated when we are stuck in the past through anger or resentment. This will help to free some of that to be put to better use.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.---senior doobie

I think minimizing words and discussion would be best at this stage. Keep your notes private for now. I envision a large scale sharing after some natural breakpoint in the timeline of our journey together.

I'll pass.  I had enough goofy new age "exercises" to last me a lifetime.

But hopefully someone will get something positive out of it.

Sorry you feel that way. There is nothing goofy about becoming aware and ridding one's self of emotions that serve no useful present-day purpose.

"There is nothing goofy about becoming aware and ridding one's self of emotions that serve no useful present-day purpose."-

It may be easy enough to forgive someone for percieved past hurts, but what about on-going, immediate or future pain?

If one was able to transmutate or transmogrify an emotional reaction to pain then I suppose the emotion being replaced will be replaced with another emotion...One that could very well be an opposite such as self-blame or self-responsibility...which could lead to self-condemnation.

I feel pretty secure in my own emotional reactions, but I do find an absence of anger to be irritating to some people...So does this mean an occaisional sharp word can be a part of a balanced relationship?

immediate or future pain has to do with willingness to endure those pains. I think you have to ask yourself, what am going through this pain for? Is it necessary? Is it someone or something else that is eating away at me? Or am i excorsizing these pains by reliving past hurts?

I agree that we often put ourselves thru unnecessay pain, such as self-condemnation, and even inventing a state of pain thru accusation...

and I suppose we do have to re-live the experience in order to find that the pain was mainly self-induced... an inapropriate response to a situation.

Swami,

Before we rid oursevles of these afflictive emotions, it may be best to understand profoundly why they bring us harm. Many people feel it justified and necessary to make enemies of others.

To PED and others:

Everybody has good questions. However, we have all discussed many hundreds of topics with little positive effects on our lives. As I previously stated, if interested, do the exercises and discover your own answers. Nothing that I will suggest can possibly do any harm. In-depth elaboration of the whys and wherefores is the intellect's way of post-poning participation.

This is not a side-step. Jump in and see what happens or ignore the lessons and focus elsewhere.

I will fully debate/discuss the ideas presented at the end of the committment period.
