Psi. azurescens outdoor project for fall 2015 - as it progresses * 4
    #21119350 - 01/14/15 07:39 AM (10 years, 4 days ago)

12/3/14

I've missed my window of opportunity in the past, creating/preparing an outdoor patch for the following season.  I started this in my journal section, but figured I'd try to make a grow log as it progresses - so I can get feedback and suggestions along the way

Prints were acquired via trade - both were obviously wild collected specimens from the PNW.

This year I was finally able to start early, or at least on schedule.  I inoculated both Psi azurescens and Psi cyanescens on MEA plates, but ended up keeping only the Psi azurescens going; since I was able to isolate some pretty gnarly looking sectors, while the Psi cyanescens germination and growth was "EH" at best.

That, and the fact that I have limited petri's - so I use them rather sparingly.

Initial inoculation was on 11/11/14, with the first signs of germination on 11/14/14

--------------------

How first transfer grew out as of 11/30/14

--------------------

12/02/14

--------------------

Made second transfer(s) today, 12/03/14

--------------------

12/6/14

--------------------

12/9/14

--------------------

12/14/14

--------------------

12/17/14

Trying out rye berries and alder chip quarts to inoculate with the Psi azurescens agar wedges.

--------------------

12/20/14

Psi azurescens is close to being in need of either another transfer, or used as an inoculant.  I also inoculated quarts of rye berries/alder chips.

--------------------

12/24/14

Mycelium is colonizing the rye berries/alder chips well.

This weekend, I'm going to 'noc up a few jars and make a couple transfers from this plate.

--------------------

12/26/14

Pressure cooked 8 cup, PP5 plastic containers with the rye berry/alder chip mix - didn't work out too well, the plastic seemed to get soft and deform a bit; then cooled and inoculated with agar wedges.

Rye berries/Alder chips/Gypsum

After 1:45:00 pressure cooking at 15PSI and cooled, inoculated with agar wedges.

--------------------

12/28/14

A couple shots of the mycelium reaching an alder chip.

--------------------

12/29/14

I see more colonization in four days between 55° - 65°F, than I do in 14 days using other Psilocybe parameter incubation temps (75° - 80°F)

--------------------

12/31/14

Just a pic from the PP5 container - mycelium reaching.

--------------------

1/7/15

Quarts are about 90% colonized and PP5 containers are starting to takeoff.  I will spawn to straight alder chips, and keep building the spawn amount until Spring.

--------------------

1/12/15

I'm liking these 6 quart, shoe box totes to get the spawn going.

--------------------

1/17/15

Azurescens mycelium is so thick and brilliantly white.  It looks like the wood chips are getting covered by white frosting.

--------------------

1/22/15

Coming along very nice, I think I may spawn to a larger tub with more wood chips.

--------------------

1/24/15

Spawned to ~ 3 lbs of alder chips and card board.

1/27/15

At this rate - I wont be able to make an outdoor azurescens bed until May!

--------------------

1/28/15

The tote looks good (in my opinion?)

--------------------

1/30/15

I'm really hopeful with this Psi azurescens spawn - it's really tearing through the wood chips and cardboard.  MUCH faster than my past attempts, maybe the agar/iso work paid off?

--------------------

2/1/15

Just a cool myc pic

--------------------

2/3/15

I have to keep feeding it wood chips, mycelium growth is aggressive - I hope it doesn't contam/stall (as mentioned above) as it keeps getting thicker, considering it seems like this winter will never end.

--------------------

2/11/15

Mycelium is still tearing through the woodchips - this tub has to weigh close to ten pounds at this point; I might have to consider splitting it up?  Winter has NO end in sight here

--------------------

2/11/15

Added another Alder bag to the Psi azurescens tote. It's getting heavy, but I still have't broken it up - the mycelium looks healthy and smells great.

--------------------

3/2/15

Tub weights 14.9 lbs at this point and looks like I'll need to add more chips soon.

3/2/15

Snow is finally melting - 18 lbs of spawn has long been ready to go outdoors.

4/13/15

Finally made a few outdoor patches under rhododendron bushes bushes.  The soil around the bushes consists of old, broken down mulch/wood chips from the previous years.

Here is a pic of one of the beds.

Nice looking work for sure. I'm doing something similar with Ps.Cyan in order to start some new outdoor patches and spread things around a bit. I like how much of that work I can do indoor.
Not sure how picky people are but I've been buying condiment cups at almost any grocery store for like 3 bucks for a pack of fifty. Not quite as nice as an actual petri but they seem to work pretty well as a cheap ass option.

Thanks man!  I'm jealous of people who live in an area where they can go out and get wild mycelium and prints - not much of anything here.

Excellent, are the condiment cups pre-sterilized (manufacturing process), or do you PC them (PP5)?

I haven't bothered to sterilize them and all of my contams I traced back to my own mistakes in handling things, lack of using an SAB, lack of prior experience and you know just being a noob for a few weeks. I'm doing some things right and a lot of things wrong just to get my feet wet so to speak.

I love the PNW even more now that I've gotten into hunting. I only need to pick Azzies and I'll have personally collected four of the WA Psilocybes. Makes fall something to look forward to that's for sure.

Love the OP, very clear and nice pics.
Did you use any antibiotics for germinating the wild spores and if not were there any signs of bacteria or other contams?
Also at which temp did you let the spores germinate on the plate?
I can't grow cube now cause it's way to cold but my fingers are itching so maybe I could get away with psi. cyan.
Got a psi. cyan. print that I like to put on agar but thinking that maybe I should get some anti-biotic agar first for germinating the spores or would that be over-kill...

thanks!

Nope, just MEA - just quickly transferred clean mycelium from the initial plate.  The temps I germinated the spore on the agar was ~ 75°F, though I've noticed that the mycelium definitely grew faster at colder temps (65°F during the day and dropping down to 55°F at night).

Yeah, I just fruited cubensis (AA+) for the first time in the dead of winter, and I definitely need a casing layer in my climate during the winter - the heat blasting constantly dried out the substrate and I have ALL side pins, I'm really disappointed in how it turned out :facepalm3:

I personally wouldn't bother with antibiotic agar, just let the spores grow out a bit when germinated and transfer any clean mycelium.

Yeah, they're still inside the house, in a tote; I just mean there's going to be snow on the ground until May!

Just being sarcastic, but if storms like this persist, it's definitely going to be well into Spring before I can prep an outdoor bed.

I inoculated these 6 quart PP5 containers on 12/26/14.  I honestly think Psi azurescens mycelium does better (faster) colonizing airy substrates like rye berries/wood chips; then small, compressed substrates such as sawdust/BRF seem to take a lot longer to colonize, as seen here (sawdust/woodchips).

I'm really hopeful with this Psi azurescens spawn - it's really tearing through the wood chips and cardboard.  MUCH faster than my past attempts, maybe the agar/iso work paid off?

Yeah - funny you say that, it also crossed my mind that when someone sends you something in a trade, often times, they could pretty much label it whatever and you might not know until you grow it out, at least with species within the same genus in this case.

Well I made like 6 or 7 jars of it. All I did was clean it on agar (one transfer), so it isn't like I got a bad isolate. No stones at all that I can see after like 4 months or longer. I cased two jars with peat in trays and put in my SGFC. Waited over a month and got nothing.

Maybe I got super bad genetics. I don't know how that is possible with 6 MS jars. I MIGHT see a few tiny stones, but I can't really tell. Seems a bit weird to me.

The guy I traded with also told me that the print I sent him was "unusable" and that he threw it away. It was just a normal cube print...

Who knows. In any case I will be throwing that print away.

Thanks, I'll definitely keep that in mind.  I started so early since I've read in my zone, you should start around December?  Though this mycelium is a pretty aggressive colonizer.  I thought it would run much slower:justdontknow:

The west coast hasn't been hit with that much snow, but I think it's still too cold to do anything outdoor where I'm at aswell.

It'll give me time to get a cyan culture started.

Anyone know first hand what kind of low temps they can handle through the winter?

I've still been picking fresh cyans in Seattle as recently as last week. I'm hoping the rain this week brings another late flush. I've been keeping tabs on a couple of spots for months now and they can come back after freezing and still flush again so...

I have to keep feeding it wood chips, mycelium growth is aggressive - I hope it doesn't contam/stall (as mentioned above) as it keeps getting thicker, considering it seems like this winter will never end.

nice mycomattie! since your fruiting indoors are you timing it to when the temps drop? ive seen some great indoor tub grows with azures and woodlovers on a shelf inside a garage. once the temps dropped the fruits exploded. good luck!

Thanks man!  No, I'm not fruiting indoors, just trying to accumulate some spawn for an outdoor bed.......but I have a garage and at this point, enough spawn to ATTEMPT fruiting indoors.

I literally have 65 inches of snow on the ground, so an outdoor bed seems a long way off at this point.

I'm loving this thread, mycomattie!  Are you pasteurizing your wood chips, and cardboard before adding to the spawn pile?  How are you hydrating them?

Looks like you're about two months ahead of me with your project!  I've got a few jars of rye/oak fully colonized now.  Any thoughts on how you're going to construct your bed?

Thanks man - I haven't pasteurized anything; I pour boiling water over the wood chips and let soak for -24 hours, then rinse a few times with cold water, then spawn.  Super easy prep.

As for the bed design, still kinda researching.  How do you plan on doing it?

I'm going to experiment with a few different things.  I'm planting rhododendron bushes on both edges of the patch.  Also going to box in the patch with wooden dividers.  I've seen images that suggest the wooden edges might help in triggering pins.

Sort of shooting from the hip with these ideas, though.  Still unsure what to do regarding a casing layer.

Holy shit that's awesome! I hope that it won't be too late to try something like this with my allenii. Right now I'm still waiting for them to germinate.

Just along for the ride.

its that bitter-sweet-sour, electric-smooth-twang. everything you ever have, are. or will feel along with every emotion, joy, hate, love, fear or aspiration burning down your nerves and into the fabric of your place in this existence at ten thousand degrees above and below zero will you find yourself wondering if you've been dead or alive this whole time. being born over and over only to die over and over hoping the wheel stops in the same place it started when you spun it, and when it finally does and you can step back and take a nice deep breath you realize how beautiful life is, remember, wake up to the most beautiful day of your life every single day, its just the way.

I am about to put mine to grain

Better late than never I hope. I had plenty of time too. Didn't expect such a ridiculously mild winter.

Can't wait mattie, this patch is going to be absurd.

Weird - so it seems to attract rodents/animals?  Might have to think of some precautions to take
I think I have a really good location though - Right under a cluster of fairly large Rhododendron bushes and about a 5 minute walk to the ocean.:toadwalk:

4/13/15

Finally made a few outdoor patches under rhododendron bushes bushes.  The soil around the bushes consists of old, broken down mulch/wood chips from the previous years.  At this point I'm happy to pass it off to mother nature :sporedrop:

Here is a pic of one of the beds.

It's best to colonize wood chips with your grain spawn before the mycelium goes into an outdoor patch.  Colonized wood chip spawn as opposed to colonized grain spawn is impossible for rodents to make an easy meal out of.

Also, to keep the kitties and other small animals from using your patch site as a restroom, cover the patch in clear plastic sheeting with slits cut into the plastic for gas exchange.  The reason it's best to use clear plastic sheeting is for the allowance of ambient light to hit your colonizing patch increasing mycelial vigor.  The plastic sheeting will also serve as a sort of casing cover keeping/maintaining the moisture content of the substrate at acceptable levels for the colonization of mushroom mycelium.

Opaque plastic sheeting is not good to use.  Opaque plastic sheeting collects heat, and blocks ambient light from hitting your patch.

It's not too late in the year to begin some more culture, get some sawdust or woodchips colonized, and spawned to an outdoor patch, and STILL get fruits this year.  The later in the year you plant your patch, though, the higher of a spawn to bulk ratio you will have to inoculate your patch with in order to see fruits the fall.

You should just get all types of wood and bury it around in segregated places close enough to the mycelium to get to it. But for more exotic woods like eu alypfus that smell harsh I would avoid. and get prints from fruits from Each pach and label the prints doood.I'm almOst certain they'll grow on Douglas fir. Also dOnt but all your eggs in one basket, make many patches dewd!!!! Namaste
