It's the husk of the shell of the seeds of the coco plant. It's an expensive mulch, and also sold as pet bedding (bed-a-beast.) You can find it at gardening places or at pet stoes.

I found that "Bed-A-Beast" coco coir at Petsmart but has any1 actually used it in a 50/50 casing instead of peat moss? I don't wanna fuck my mushies up if it does not work.

Could you use it in place of verm in the jars?? Just wondering because its easier to get for me than verm.

How do you case it? like depth, any patching, temp and air exchange? Ever find a need for crushed oyster shells?

No, verm in the jar serves another purpose.

Coco coir is kinda alive when compared to verm. You need verm
on the jars to ensure that the inside of the jar is sterile, somehow
not breathing from the outside [not really].
But when it comes to casing material, noone needs something that
prevents the mycelium of breathing.

as for 2nd question... i never used oyster shells. never did the
ph thing checked, because i couldnt. so i found out that plastic
containers for my casings were a disaster. since my first success
with metal containers, i always work with them. and the casing
is plain coco-coir and nothing else. works for me

I never use plastic containers. I use aluminum containers, fill them up with the casing, add some water, cover them with foil, then pop the suckers in the oven for 30 minutes. Take them out and let them kool, then case.

i really dont know. perhaps its something to do with PH? i really
dont know. my casings are always in metallic trays, which btw seem after
a few uses to start oxydating -> rusting. and that seems also to be
liked by the mycelium...
