Whats up with this slow colonization
    #2111727 - 11/16/03 02:11 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

My jars go a few days and look almost 100% colonized on the outside, but then I beat them against a tire and they look almost 100% uncolonized! I dont understand it. Theyve been going since 10/30, innoced with live mycellium. Ive shook them every 4 days or so. I dont know how Im going to make a casing with a cake with even miniscule amounts of uncolonized seed. Im worried.

Is this normal?

wild bird seed, im thinking of switching brands, maybe it was coated with fungiside. Im pretty sure the temps have remained at high enough temps. But pretty sure isnt good enough, ill crank the temps up and pay closer attention to them. Dont rye berries also kick ass as substrate?

So what should I do? Keep shaking them every few days until its totally white? I guess overshaking beats undershaking.

One thing I dont understand. When people say 100% colonized, does that mean you cant recognize a single kernel of grain? Or do the grains retain their shape even when they're colonized?

How long would you let them go before youd say there is something else wrong, i.e. sour rot contam?

Dont go crazy with shaking I just invert when they slow up
When they are stalled i just turn them over
If they have sour anything you will see it settling at the bottom
Half contamed jars like these just go outside
Sometimes you get a pleasant surprise
Mycology is a great hobby of mine
This place is ultra cool
