quick ram question
    #21112785 - 01/13/15 10:03 AM (9 years, 4 months ago)

i lost my account on pc help forum thingy so asking here

i finally managed to install 2 more identicle (or so i thought) sticks earlier i had to flash the bios to even get all 4 slots to be seen without beeping at me but it works   then in cpu-z i saw the overall speed had dropped and in spd the 2 new rams were not showing pc2 6400 (400mhz) as they are labled and show pc2 5300 333, i have set the speed in bios to 800 and saw the overall speed go back up, but the individual sticks are showing 333 still

numbers vary in the jedec 3 for the tRAS and tRC  first 2 (18 23)  new 2  (15 20)

pc specs
win 7 32
amd 6000+
mobo m2ne sli
ram kingston 6400 ddr2 800mhz

oh ive put the voltage up too but that did nothing

That's an older mobo so you would likely have to overclock the FSB to get the RAM to run at 800MHz
Typically you do need exactly identical kits of memory when adding more RAM if you want them to run at the same speeds

How much total RAM is it and how much are each module? 4x2GB? What are the exact specs of the two ram kits?

You're not looking at SPD->Memory slot selection for speed are you? That window just reports the part specifications and timing profiles not the actual performance its running at. For actual performance look at memory->timings.

yeah it's ancient and even the sata doesnt work, i have a shiny new haswell board in prep for that build
the memory is kingston hyperx 4 x 1gb modules 6400 800 mhz ddr2 i checked its on the asus ram list.

well i looked at both and as mentioned after i set the speed from auto to 800 mhz in bios then i saw it go back to normal 389mhz area

i just was thrown off by the other info in spd, so its all good?

i notice a difference in firefox but not as much as i was hoping from a cubase project that was having issues due to all the kontact vst's, but i think its a little better, just wanted to grab the cheap ram for a little boost in places but will be selling this on once my new build gets underway.

That's what I thought. They actually just announced the Ram 1500 "Rebel" which is gonna compete with the F150 Raptor.

What are you using to read the memory speed?
FYI with memory speed in software readings, you have to double the number to get your "effective" frequency. DDR - double data rate

i.e - If Cpu-Z says it's running at 389MHz (which is a weird ass number?) then it's actually running at 778MHz. It should say 400MHz in CPU-Z if its running at 800.
But it's possible your mobo is just slightly downclocking it, or it's just an inaccurate reading. But if CPU-z says it's running at close to 400, then you actually are running at ~800MHz.

thanks mate i was already aware of ddr speeds etc   its all working ok it seems and yeah at that speed, i tried a little overclocking which was okay and saw it at 410 but then sony vegas wouldn't even start with an overclock even weirder!

can't wait to get a propper build set up as much as i need to get off this machine but a faster up to date one would be better than thios ancient thing.
