how did figure out how to hunt
    #21109861 - 01/12/15 08:17 PM (9 years, 4 months ago)

When you first got started how did that work. Weren't you worried about picking the wrong one? Did you take a book with you to try and find the right one and hoped that you got the one you were looking for?

i started by researching how to identify mushrooms, and then i went out and collected specimens and identified them the best i could.

basically just read up on what a veil is and what a vulva is and how to do spore prints and you'll be headed down the right path.
also familiarizing yourself with all the lookalikes of the particular mushroom you are looking for is very important.
but NEVER eat any mushrooms that have not been identified by someone who knows what they are doing.

the good folks here at the shroomery are pretty good at identification, so posting a proper a proper I.D. request can save you a lot of grief.

Yes, very much so.

I photographed and brought them all home and tried to ID them in the evenings.

A really good thing to do is to photograph and collect everything, and post them here or on mushroomobserver.org for ID.

I got started when I was just a kid probably around 6-7. My family has always hunted for Morel and Puffballs, so I grew up around it all.

About 5 years ago I decided to start looking into other edible mushrooms just because I hated not having anything other than Morels in the spring and Puffballs in the fall to look forward to. My family thought I was crazy to try eating these "weird" mushrooms I found, but after Chanterelles, Boletes, Shaggy Mane, Hen of the Woods, and Chicken of the Woods they decided I was on to something pretty damned good and let me go at it.

My dad and my sister started to get an interest in the mushrooms they found and when my sister first started dating her boyfriend and he came over he had never eaten anything other than button mushrooms. Turns out he loves them all now and asks when we can go hunting and what we can find.

I got Mushrooms Demystified along with a few other ID'ing books and started with pretty easily recognized ones, usually picking and spending an evening pouring over the books and not even thinking of trying to eat any until I was absolutely sure. I often have another look at the potential ID and see what they think so its not just me hoping. It's worked great for me so far.

As others have said, I took photographs in habitat, and again at home and got them identified with the help of the ID board. For the most part I've just gone out with a book (mushrooms demystified) and taken home whatever I found. I've only gone out a few times, but the only time I was a bit nervous was when I ate some of an agaricus arvensis, mostly because I had never eaten a wild mushroom before. If you aren't certain of what a mushroom is, just don't eat it and you have nothing to worry about.

As everyone else has said, IDing them yourself gets you more and more familiar with them.

You can also just browse the threads here and see what different mushrooms get identified as. Over time you will be able to recognize certain species. r/mycology on reddit is another good resource.

I think the easiest way to start is to familiarize yourself with certain mushrooms groups/genuses one at a time. like Amanitas have a certain look to them, have white free gills, and often have a partial + universal veil. Or Coprinoid mushrooms have a certain look to them, are often thin and fragile, and they digest themselves into black ink over time. Similarly, Boletes have a typical mushroom shape, grow in association with certain trees and have pores on their underside.

This type of broad categorizing comes from having seen the same mushrooms over and over on forums like these or in the field. As you learn more, you will be able to differentiate further.
