SGFC cake/oven rack VS foil/lids VS nothing

Okay. I browsed a bunch of SGFCs online recently.
There's a few methods I've seen (actually a ton of methods) that are interesting to me.
First would be the cake/oven rack above the perlite. Pros or Cons to this? Also should the oven rack be ABOVE the perlite an inch or so? Or resting just on top of it?
Second method is the foil/lids that people put their cakes on. I guess this is to keep the perlite from getting too dirty? Or cakes getting too wet?
And the Third method I've seen, is where one guy was putting his cakes DIRECTLY ON the perlite. So the cakes would leech moisture from the perlite I guess?
(I'm not doing bulk trays in the SGFC this time)
I'm not really on a budget, even though this may be one of the rare times I ever do cakes... Should I go with either over the other?
---I figured maybe if the cake/oven rack hovers above, you may get better pinning from the bottom of the cake (underneath the rack)(?) I don't know. So I'm asking.

You can use the rack, but should still place the cakes on foil on the rack, or you will have mushrooms growing down, and eventually into the perlite.

Either one of those ways is fine EXCEPT for placing cakes directly on perlite. Placing cakes directly on perlite will waterlog them.
Foil for the rack is a good suggestion, blocking the bottom from pinning is okay since it'll even out anyways. Instead of getting those three pins on the bottom and two pins on top, you'd just get 5 pins on top and none on the bottom.

Thanks, both of you. And good example.

It won't waterlog them at all. No, the reason we separate cakes from the perlite with aluminum foil is because if you give it a chance, the mycelium will try to colonize the perlite, resulting in poor yield and trich-ridden perlite.

The foil helps pinning. It doesn't block it. It creates a pocket of high humidity for primordia to develop in.

My bad, I always heard it'll waterlog cakes .

Not sure what I was thinking one that one, I've never had foil block pins, but something like lids seems to do so in my experience, my point was just that even if there is a part of a cake that can't pin, the pin will show up somewhere else.
Sorry guys.

That rascally rabbit. No, I've never had problems with waterlogging due to contact with perlite, personally. Just poor fruiting and contam.

RR has done some really awesome things but his rhetoric is crude and his methods are crude at best. Take everything he says with a grain of salt. There's not enough moisture in the perlite to water log a cake, fuck I used to let cakes sit in a saucer of water (also a RR tip) and that doesn't water log a cake

RR suggests to do that only for a few hours, or overnight at best...and only if the cakes are drying out....he does not suggest to keep them in a saucer of water...

All the same, when you're doing V-tek (not something I'd recommend except as a novelty) you bottom-water constantly with no real waterlogging to speak of.
