WBS Question
    #21107643 - 01/12/15 01:06 PM (9 years, 4 months ago)

I was doing some research on WBS since I can't find any proper brands where I live, so I have to buy whatever WBS consists of separately and then mix them all together.  From what I've read, pure millet is not as good as mixed WBS and WBS mostly consists of white millet, red millet, sunflower seeds and corn, and it is commonly advised that one should sort out the sunflower seeds.

So, does that mean Ishould buy white millet, red millet and corn and mix them all together?  Is there anything else I can add in order to obtain a better grain mix, and would anyone advise against any of this?

Any access to whole grains? If so, you can likely skip WBS and just use a whole grain like Oats or Rye.

Why don't you try Oats or Rye?

Are those unavailable?

When I do wbs, I use fooman's method. That being said, i dont go crazy picking out the sunflower seeds. I use a strainer to scoop up most of the floaters and thats it. I still have plenty of sunflower seeds in my wbs mix and it all colonizes just fine IME.

Where are you located if you dont mind me asking? They have birds there right?

Are whole grains better than WBS?  I live in Istanbul, Turkey; ofc there are some brands in pet shops but only a limited number of brands and they either got pesticides in them or stupid useless ingredients.  Also, access to seeds alone is easier than WBS.  I would like to give whole grains a try, they are also easily accessible.

I buy the Flock and Feast WBS from Albertson's. It's 6.99 for a 20lb bag and mostly millet and milo. I clean it by putting it in a pot with slowly running water. The sunflower seeds and floaters just spill out.

OP I'm surprised they don't sell WBS in Turkey, but if that's the case, your best bet is to use any unhulled whole grain like wheat or rye berries, sorghum, or oats.

For our purposes it's all the same.

Go for whole grains.

Look up Impossibly Simple Oat Grain Tek.

I've been having severe bacteria problems with my wheat, so I have to fractionally sterilize it. After I run out I'm just going back to WBS.
