Some questions about fruiting conditions.
    #21107629 - 01/12/15 01:02 PM (9 years, 4 months ago)

1. Is purchasing artificial lighting necessary, or will the ambient light from my window be enough?

2. Will temperatures of 17C (63F) hurt them? I'm reluctant to buy a space heater because they are expensive and hog power. I'm okay with slightly slower growth.

3. Does perlite replace misting, or do I still spray the sides of the chamber?

4. How often should I take the lid off and fan out the CO2? I'm finding a lot of conflicting answers.

1. Get one. 12/12 cycle

2. You'll be alright

3. No, and you don't spray the sides anyway. Mist the sub

4. Fan 3-5 times per day

Depends on the amount of light that window is providing. It will likely be enough, but most people here are into predictable harvest, so most go with a light.

2. Will temperatures of 17C (63F) hurt them? I'm reluctant to buy a space heater because they are expensive and hog power. I'm okay with slightly slower growth.
No harm will come to mycelium at those temps, just slower growth cycles

3. Does perlite replace misting, or do I still spray the sides of the chamber?
Perlite does not replace the need to mist. Perlite is used to keep the humidity in your FC up, where misting is to replace lost/used moisture while fruiting.

4. How often should I take the lid off and fan out the CO2? I'm finding a lot of conflicting answers.
2-5 times a day. Depends on certain factors, but just watch your cakes and make adjustments as needed. I find 3 to be sufficient, but YMMV.

Just a plastic tub from Canadian Tire. 20x16 inches and 14 high. I still have to drill the holes in it. I was going to cut a square in the lid then replace it with saran wrap for light to get in, but I guess I'll have to use something like Plexiglas if there is a light right above it.

Thanks for the info Bugler Boy & Fungus Mountain!

A CFL bulb isn't going to produce enough heat to be an issue with saran wrap, if that's what you were thinking.

That was what I was thinking. TY. Don't have very good cutting tools that makes things easier.

Is the tub itself solid or clear? Without proper tools cutting lids is a big pita.

You could do the light from the side if its clear or maybe just go snag a clear tub/lid for like 5-10$ and save the hassle since you haven't drilled it yet

Here it is with a 250ml jar for scale http://puu.sh/er3jD/df644ae80c.jpg

Side lighting sounds a lot easier, but I was thinking that would cause one side to get not enough light and the other too much.

Oh and one other question. How much room do the cakes need around them? I was hoping to put 5 in that container

Side light will be fine. Pull it back from the tub so it spreads the light out and its not directed in one spot

5 cakes will fit in there do something like the 4 corners and one in the middle
