Debate broke out in class today...

It was mostly about the death penalty and abortion. However, what I wanted to say was that there was this one girl who kept saying over and over that people that have killed, raped, etc. another should remain in prison so "they can turn their face to God." She was very narrowminded and wouldn't accept any other comment. I found it kind of odd that earlier on she was saying, "How can someone not believe in God?". I'm sitting there thinking how can someone say something like that? Don't get me wrong, she's a very cool person to be around, but is it proper to bring God and/or religion into justice? Any comments? I'm just interested in what you guys have to say about this...

no it isn't okay to introduce a belief system into an arguement.
There was a girl like that in my ethics class that was always playing the god card. In a discussion about sex, she said that she doesn't have sex because she can pray with her boyfriend. She said during prayers she often thinks, "How could this get any better? Why would I need sex."
There's just no talking to these people so don't try

What in the hell does having sex and praying have to do with each otheR?

Heheh, why can't she both pray and have sex? I'm sure she doesn't pray 24 hours a day, 7 days a week... there's gotta be time for a little somethin' in the mix;)
That's one thing that really gets me, the idea that sex is wrong, that our bodies are evil and that indulging physical needs will cause us to burn in an abyss of fire for all eternity. Oh my.
And to stay on topic: religion should not play a role in justice. The purpose of jail is not and never should be to "turn someone to God." Perhaps if they find some form of spiritual guidance or comfort while in the slammer that could be a positive thing in thier personal lives, but it must never be the intention of the justice system to put people onto a religious path.

If she so strongly believes in God, then why doesn't she realize that she has nothing to worry about. She's not the one who will be judged for killing an unborn child. She should know full well that God will give them what they have coming to them in the end, am I correct?

damn, what kind of boyfriend doesn't have sex????
-------------------- Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

Here is something i dont understand, Many people say that everything that happens is gods will, but then they judge, or pity or question people who dont believe in god, or dont believe in god the same as they do, or whatever, and i dont get that, because by their logic, whatever these people believe, or do, or dont' believe or dont do, is gods will. I can say this because i haven't formed a definative opinion one way or the other, on the question of if everything is gods will or not. But honestly i lean towards the conclusion that both these people are doin exactly what they must do, and thus to judge any of them is not fair, but if i do judge them well, then i was supposed to, because i was faited to by god/the system, and thats ok because i think that this is all probably leading to some end or purpose of god's that is good even if on the idividual, or daily level we cannot see that.... whatever. But like i said, i'm just leaning that way, i dont believe that (yet) with absolute conviction, nor is it likely i'm supposed to (yet?) Sincerely, That which is, and has no choice but to be (maybe)(probably)

That's a sign of a mature relationship, commonly developing after marriage.
-------------------- To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.' Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence. Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains. Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Marriage... sure... that's almost a given.
But girlfriend and wife are not necessarily equivalent in the giving-their-significant-other-some-much-needed-ass department.
