Sclerotia harvest and yield...
    #21098102 - 01/10/15 05:39 PM (9 years, 4 months ago)

Hi all!
So I started some sclerotia jars, some in August and some in September. Some are atl7 and some are tampanensis. I noticed a small bit of contams at the top of one atl7 jar from September. It looked mostly healthy, been watching them after another jar recently went all green, and this one just started. (I'm not too worried about the contams; I have serious mold in my air and walls and can never fruit in this location anyway, so I stick to sclerotia. I've also consumed seriously moldy fungus, and while it was a pretty dark experience, And not something I recommend at all, I am not opposed to a lil fuzz on the side, so long as the specimen itself looks healthy... But this could be more risky than I'm aware of....idk).
Anyway, I cracked that jar befor it got bad. 140g wet healthy alt7 sclerotia + another 50 with some questionable coloring.... 200g wet  off a quart! Wbs+ custom blend... 4 months
From what I'm reading on here, that converts to about 2oz dry, which, again by what I'm reading here, sounds like between 2-3x average yield?!?
Sooo, I have 7 more jars... Some are have gone for 5 months, some for 4...
They look healthy to me, but I'm no expert. I don't want them to slowly contaminate one by one over time, but I'd like to let them sit as long as possible for best yield, but it looks like I'm already scoring good on yields....
Also, there are some large visible chunks of sclerotia against the glass in some places of some jars, but I don't think they look as "full" as the one I just cracked. And one more note, one of the 5 month-ers looks very dense, it has nuggets pushing the main block inward away from the glass, but it looks very white, like the gap formed created a new space high humity for new growth...
Idk what do yall think? Crack em now, get what I got? Or let em sit, play it out- maybe more will contam, but maye I'll get insane yield/increased potency?
I'm not greedy, but par of me wants to just see how far theyll go...

if its starting to pull away from the glass its starting to dry up, harvest sooner than later.

Word, thanks 13...

Here's some pics, I don't have any fancy camera, so this is about as good as it's gonna get..

The first are all of the atl7
The second is a close-up comparison of (I lied, it's on 4 months) the jar that's pulling from the glass the most, next to a 5 month jar that's still got new growth
Third are some big dark nuggets in 4 months
4th are the tampas.. I don't see any big guys like atl7, but lots of little ones all matted together. The jar to the left actually had a small circle of some green contam early befor it colonized fully. I carefully shook the oposite side of the jar only to disperse the healthy mycelium, and that took over, bulked up, and ate the green stuff (so far as I can tell).. I mean tht was 5 months ago... It should've ROTTED deff in that time from my experience... Strong Tampa ate my mold:)
Last pic is what I havested from the jar from the first post... Whatever contaminate it was, it either turns blue, or stresses the Psilly myc to turn blue.. In the top bit of the jar I pulle those few on the first sheet, plus some squishy rotting guys... All the remaining grain/myco turns blue/green black, and these nuggets hav a bit of color as well...
Whereas the stuff on the second sheet has gottn some blue edges, but I think that's probly normal (idk first sclerotia grow). None of the remaining grain/myc took the color tht the top part did, no squishy guys
And, just in general, so these seem to get a lil blue on the edges of the Nuggets with time, but there's no blue stain of I simply break a nugget in half and let it sit... Well eventually, after a while...

Sorry, the last pic loaded upside-down... So reverse that data..
Big pile is "clean", small pile is a lil gnarly, more color change in nugs & surrounding myc...

http://
Thanks!
So I put off harvest another week or however it's been, just opened another jar...
Wet yield:173g
They're going strait into chocolate, so won't have exact dry weight, but I'm assuming ~1/4th wet weight so..
Appr. Dry yield: 52g
That's atl7 on wbs+ custom mix, knocked up in September bout 4.5 months.
Will update as I go...

This was the jar with the myc pulling away from the glass....
Wet yield: 88g - HALF what I have been getting...
Appr. Dry yield: 27g
No clue what went different with this one...

Nicely done.:thumbup::thumbup:

What was the drying method you used for the first jar?

I ask because your dry estimates are roughly 25% dry material and 75% water. My dry weights have been roughly 33-35% wet weight even after 14+ hrs in a dehydrator and time in a sealed chamber with silica.

Ok next jar was actually RGS+ mix, but it yielded lowest of all so far
Wet yield: 80g
Appr. Dry yield: 24g

Good call scrimshaw, my first jar was 195 wet dried to 58, just on paper with fan on it.
Which comes out to 30%, I'll go back and edit those dry estimates.
And yes bw, they were multispore, so that's deff a factor.
Mushpunx, yeah I wish I was doing this continuous, but this is really just wrappn up the end of old projects. I've always wanted to just stack shelves of jars, stagger them n harvest at like 6months... Then just take that sub n fruit it after.. I hear the fruit effects are lil diff or stronger, makes sense.
I was thinking, as Ive been picking stones all night; vast majority of stones (all the big ones) form next to the glass, or then next to each other. Why? There is PLENTY of undigested grain in the middle of the jar (colonized, but still visible grain with visible starch etc), so I don't Beleive any low yield has much to do with lack of nutes... It's strange too because the way I understand sclerotia and their biological function is that they form in grasslands a the dry season approaches, to protect against drough. So sclerotia should form under drier conditions, yet here they are forming in the highest humidity against te glass with condensation droplets around and such, yet the middle of the jar with undigested grain is actually pretty dry... Why? What's happening here?
Here's my thoughts: sclerotia Indeed form in response to drought conditions, but rather than waste energy producing modifications everywhere within their mycellial network, they focus this energy in area where they meet physical constraints/resistance, something hard that it can't easily digest.. In nature this would be a fat tree root or rock. Now, when the rain finally comes again, if you clumped up your sclerotia bodies around large hard surfaces, I would think that the rainwater would collect around and follow that hard surface according to gravity. Kinda like rain collecting and streaming off the sides of your moving car, even tho the rain isn't coming down hard at all, maybe just a drizzle. Evolved habits to help guarantee rehydration during wet season... Just my thoughts, maye I'm way off...
But If I'm right, I have more ideas. Sounds like we need to increase surface area, not volume or weight. What if one was to add a few flat "river rocks" to the grain jar, for more surface area in the middle, or perhaps marbles? Or fill the jar with grain bout an inch, then put a shot glass or something in the middle, and fill around it. These would all allow for moisture to build up on their surface, and sclerotia could have more place where it could butt-up n compact. Think about that when ur Thinkn high volume.
Any other ideas?

I was thinking that same thing. I was gonna try marbles. Good stuff man.
