Slow drip from back of toilet into bowl

OK you DIYers; I've got a slow drip in my toilet. Water is gradually leaking from the back/top of the toilet bowl, through the hole, down into the toilet bowl. Once every so often the water level in the back of the bowl gets low enough that the mechanism is triggered, and it fills back up with fresh h20.
I hoped it was just an adjustment of the chain that connects the flushing-lever to the rubber thinga-ma-jig that seals off the hole down into the bowl, but the adjustment i made had no effect.
So, are there quick fixes for this? OR do i need to buy a new rubber-thingy?

little screw on the top the float, try tightening it.. however it will only last a little longer. sometimes dirt/hard water build up in the valve will cause that or age. you could loosen the screw and see if the dirt frees itself.
9 times out of 10, you need a new float stop. like 14 dollars at most hardware store, 15-20 min to fix it. Its not hard to do.

While you are at it, memes, replace the shut off valve and tank/bowl gaskets.

Sounds like the flapper (the roundish thingy that sits on top of the hole going from the tank to the bowl) is having issues seating properly and creating a proper seal. Sometimes, when they operate via chain attached to the flush lever, you have to untangle them slightly to give proper slack that it can actually drop down and seat itself (hence the origin of the "jiggle the handle" thing we've all dealt with at one time or another). A new flapper itself can be acquired, as can the entire set of internal tank guts, at any big box hardware store for relatively cheap.

could be the flapper or the overflow is letting the water into the bowl because the valve is stuck. if he hears a hissing then its the valve. if the flapper/stop isnt seated right, he could reach in and hold it down ...
could also reduce pressure in the line by turning the shut off valve almost closed. It will take longer to fill the tank, but wont waste as much water.
tell us how you fixed it.. please.

A new flapper costs like 2-3$ You don't even need tools to change it. You'll spend more time going to get the part than actually installing it.

Yep, they usually just hook on to plastic tabs through holes in the rubber ends of the flapper. Replacing the chain could help too, depending.
Another possibility is the water level has risen due to the float rising up too high and it just continually dumps water over the top. Solution, either bend the rod down between ball and valve for old style. Might be newer style with a screw to turn to make valve shut off sooner and lower water level. Speaking of which, will save water and for an old toilet will still flush well unless you lower it crazy far.
As mentioned, if motivated, change out the guts including the rubber washers between tank and bowl because they eventually fail too. New valve will be up and down and better than big float type.
So get your hands wet memes, toilets are not rocket science.

Also, those things you drop into the tank that dissolve slowly to keep your toilet clean are horrible for the internal parts, especially the rubber gaskets.

No doubt. Chlorine in the "tap" water x 100...

It should also be noted that the grossly excessive chlorine of the keep you bowl blue and similar "helpful" products also destroys the flapper, leading to the conditions of the OP. It also destroys the rubber washers between the tank and bowl, that when they start slowly dripping on the floor over time do considerable damage.
