Questions about GE filtration
#21096278 - 01/10/15 09:57 AM (9 years, 2 months ago) |
|

So I have just checked on my master jars and all 24 jars from batch A and batch B are 100% colonized. I just shook them and started preparing more grain for the G2G transfers.
My master jars did not have filtration except for microtape which I had put in a day after inoculation.
I was going to pick some SFDs but I had a thought.
Is it possible or a good idea to use new cigarette filters, the ones you usually buy for rollies? Would these be good to use as contam filter or are it's pores too wide?
Also I am a little confused with this whole EZ-Felt. Is EZ-Felt like normal felt? Is normal felt okay to use?

No.
They won't let air be passively exchanged. Cig filters need you to pull to allow air to come through.
I know, I've rolled plenty of blunts and jays.

If you don't want to buy filter discs you can use polyfil or tyvek as a GE filter.
Feel free to try using your cigarette filters though... I've just never heard anyone using them.
Also I have a friend who tried the EZ-felt stuff once and he didn't have much success with it.

where they just sitting around with an open hole in the lid? you should post a pic to make sure they're all fine, or seeing as you've shook them already watch the recovery of the grains.

No no what the hell xD
That would totally destroy the whole purpose lol
They were covered in foil as thats the initial method I was using until someone pointed out that it wouldn't allow enough GE and I had to resort to microtape since I already inoculated. I did the whole setup in an SAB, by the book yada yada so it's all good.
The only weird thing I had was the metabolites which stemmed from the sudden drop in temperature we experienced over here between Christmas and New Years.

It's not that I don't want to use SFDs but I know my country and things are not s easily accessible as it is over there in murica. In-fact after I posted I went straight to the biggest hardware store on the island and when I asked they all looked at me as if I was speaking chinese to them.
What I ended up buying are these sticky felt tabs that you use to put underneath the feet of chairs so it doesn't scratch the wood. The felt is thick so I am going to slice it in half and separate the glue side from the felt side and see how I go with that.
It's the only choice I have right now.
That, or the piece of green normal felt I have left which I am guessing is not the same as EZ-Felt or the microtape but guessing since it's going inside a PC the glue will probably peel off and mess up the grains.

Scheduled shaking is for next Monday.
I'll try and grab some pictures during that time. I do not enter the shroom room unless it's for a scheduled cleaning or I have some other task that deals with the jars. The rest I keep it locked.

veda is the only one with a clue in that link(miss that guy lol) metabs are the result or stressed mycelium from too high of temps or fighting off a contaminate, normally the latter with spawn

It only does that when temperatures are too high? Or does it apply for low temps as well?
I was going at a steady 24C then it dropped to 18.5C in a day. Unfortunately I live in a country with bi-polar Mediterranean weather and to make matters worse I live on the top floor
Not sure if I have proper filters, as I said I used microtape for the master jars. I hope I dont have contams.
I'm paranoid now.

@ the OP: polyfil is plain old pillow stuffing.
When I first started I sacrificed one to get going.

temp swings are more likely to cause condensation, and foil is not a filter. if your jars sat for a day or 2 with only foil no filter they're probably not doing that good. waiting for them pics to confirm tho even tho a lot of nasties can be riding along germinated or not just waiting for the right conditions to show its ugly face..

To be honest I was kinda of put off from posting pictures here. I was put off from seeing so many comments of contams. It gets me paranoid. For all I know I could have been doomed from the start. Then again it could be nothing and I'm just worrying for nothing.
Either or I'll post some pictures tomorrow.
Now back to my original question.
I went around and asked for SFDs and no one knew what it is. However I've found these adhesive felt protectors, the kind you put under your chair's legs to protect it from scratch.
- It's felt
- It's Thick
- The adhesive side is a small breathable layer
Can these be used for filters or is there any potential in them?
I was thinking either cutting it in half or stick two together.

The jars only sat for a couple of hours with foil on them, about 12 in total(?)
That's why I put the micropore tape on them.
Temperatures were a steady 24C until that cold spike we got. After that I checked on them there was a droplet of water but yellow in color, the color of amber.
I have full confidence in myself, they should be fine but you never know.
I'll be doing G2G transfer soon. Hopefully, if it is something, I will be able to separate it.

why should they be fine if they were sitting unprotected and without a proper filter for 12 hrs? all kinds of nasty would've landed in there!
get polyfill, it works as a filter if stuffed real tight, its only polyester that comes in bags for stuffing teddybears or pillows and such! fuzz-nutter uses the stuffing from his couch an old polyester filled pillow would work too!

They had foil when I pced them. Inoculation was done in an SAB. Foiled worked in the past, not as efficiently, but still worked.
I was able to correct it though in less than a day.

yea ive been having a problem with this real white fuzzy shit growing ontop of my myc in all my petris...everyone for a while now has had it, i must have like a ridiculous spore load of whatever it is but anyway i grabbed a few chunks that werent visibly covered with the fuzz (although i knew it was still there) and i put it to grain in a few jars and they ended up looking exactly like that. they even smelled like mushrooms when i finally opened them but there was another light smell of weirdness. and a whole bunch of tiny white balls. i waited to see if maybe they were knots starting to form just in case but they were not they just kept multiplying. weird shit

well dont give up just cause you got a contam, that shit happens...a lot if you grow for a while. just try again and this time stuff a tight wad of poly-fil in a 1/4" or so hole in the lid. or order sfd online. there a buck a piece and you can trace a nickel or similar coin on them and cut out littles circles. i can do 7-8 lids with 1 large SFD
it seems like you just wernt taking the contam thing serious enough is all. in this hobby its a very good idea to be over cautious, the foil as your only protection even for 12 hrs is almost a guarantee for contams. sometimes it will work but you have to think of something like that as unfeasible to make it long in this hobby...if any of that makes sense

I took it quite seriously. I wrote down notes that I found here on proper sanitation very carefully. All the steps. I had the proper material, made an SAB...etc
If any of you bothered to fucking read I posted pictures of the felt filter that was available to me. No one even responded on that.
It just turned into this.
I just dont care anymore, I don't have the time. This has been demotivating as hell. I guess I'll chuck it in the list of things I am not good at.
Moving on.

Funny how filters never cropped up while doing my research and then it did after I inoculated.
Me registering a month a go does not stem the length of my knowledge. This isn't the first time trying mushrooms.
I have a lot of work to do regards personal life. This was just a side project to see how far I can get. Not very.

of course filters are important, how else are you going to keep things sterile? we go through all the work to sterilize our grains, build SABs to keep them sterile and then you dont think having a filter is important? every jar lid tek speaks of filters. check my sig for the most used ones!

Don't put words in my mouth. I didn't say they weren't important. I pointed out the fact on how unfortunate it was to find out about them when I did.
For the 1000th time I posted a picture of the felt-filters that are available to me that I would like to use. I asked for opinions about it, hence why thread was created. I asked wether it was a good medium to use as a filter.

No, that chair felt wouldn't work... If you would read you would see where several people have said you could use polyfil as a filter, which is very easy to come by.

I am not complaining nor whining. What could I possibly expect you guys to do this? I got contams. Chuck. Move on. There is nothing much I can do. I said I can't do it now cause I don't have the time and several other reasons. Go be a hero somewhere else.
Yes, I've seen their replies several times but I wanted a yes or no type answer to get going.

About the polyfill. When PCing, you cover it with foil I imagine to prevent it from getting wet?
Also can you stack jars in PC?

Do I put the needle through the polyfill when inoculating?

Hahaha!
I was worried that lifting the lid, even in an SAB, would risk the entrance of contams. Don't worry though, I am buying some self-healing ports and just get it over and done with
