Need to move to a PMP (edit: or so I thought)

Hi Shroomery,
IME, I am personally unable to maintain an SGFC in this dry climate that I live in (it is also because I, due to irregular work hours, cannot tend to it as I should).
I have searched around and I have now decided to try a PMP instead. I actually decided on this after desperately placing two bubbler jars (aquarium-pump, air-stone-driven) and seeing for the first time that the humidity at last rose high (it is at currently 74% and climbing). I believe my Blue Oysters are so happy about this (until I eat them, that is.) And, from what I understand FAE is also taken care of.
My question concerns the holes that I need to drill in the lid of the plastic tote that I am going to buy. How far apart do they need to be? The SGFC instructions are quite clear, 1/4-inch holes spaces 2 inches apart on all six sides, but from my understanding the lid of the PMP FC is the only place to drill (apart from holes on a side to let the air hoses enter) but I do not know the diameter of the holes or how far apart they should go. (I have searched for HOWTOs but have not found any.)
Me and my Blue Oysters will be very grateful if you can give me some good directions here.
(I do respect the SGFC deeply, I have read lots on it, but I am not the regular type, I am pretty sure that I, personally, cannot maintain it, I really need a more autonomous FC, even if I will certainly tend to it too.)
Kind regards Johnny

RogerRabbit designed the SGFC when he was working 12 hour shifts. If he can do it then I'm pretty sure you can.

RogerRabbit said: Then think outside the box and build a shotgun terrarium which fixes all the problems with outdated PMPs and does so with natural air currents.
The problem with PMPs was and is the steady-state humidity. Mycelium wants a varying humidity level to pin and fruit properly. A shotgun terrarium goes through these daily oscillations as the temp and humidity in the room its in changes throughout the day. A PMP is isolated from these changes, thus develops a steady saturation-humidity level which impedes pinning and growth.
Take a quick look at all the so-called 'automated terrariums' over the last ten years via the search function and try to find one single grower who is still using one. RR
With that being said I searched Poor Man's Pod and found this:

I live in a hot and dry area, and have a busy schedule, and have no issues with any of my sgfc. My buddy down the street uses a PMP and the two don't compare. We both grow all kinds of gourmet and some fun guys. I would advise against A PMP or at least try them both out.

A Martha style green house would most likely be heated suited for you.
Pmp are notoruis for lacking in Fae or no holding enough humidity.
Just spend the extra money on a greenhouse.

This is another good option. I'm looking to grab a few after I move. Big lots has them cheaper than most places if your near one.

Thank you all for your replies.
It was very interesting to read that mycelium needs a varying humidity I did not know that.
I have a hunch though that those variations need to lie in the upper range of 50-100%, not in the lower range as my terrarium has - my Blue Oysters are really not doing well.
taGyo: I had read the post you recommended, it did not mention anything about spacing of the holes.
Apps: Yes, you seem to have a similar situation, but I trust you are indeed able to tend to the FC some time during the day and not have it being at 50% the whole day? It could also be a personality trait, on my part. I live very irregular.
Onlineblojo02184: Mmmm, greenhouse, but there is still this "mist 2 or 3 times per day or as needed", I am simply not the householdy man I maybe should be.
Could all this be resolved by somehow increasing FAE to the PMP (an extra strong pump) and putting it on a timer to create cycles of humidity? I am willing to do an experiment.
Kind regards Johnny

I wasted over 200$ trying to make a "perfect pmp" it's been tried and it doesn't work. There are greenhouse methods that seem to work, but you must follow the tek, and again, just from personal experience it was easier to go a different route.

Hi Bill,
Thank you for your reply.
Yes, all this is making an impression on me. There is still the stubborn boy inside of me who really wants to have it his way. But I'll try to be a bit grown up and digest all this information for a while.
I'll do a corresponding search on greenhouses and see if they can have an "autonomous flavor" to them.
Thank you all for your feedback. Back to the search engines!
Kind regards Johnny

With the Martha's you can simply run a humidifier on a timer, and attach computer fans to the top and bottom also on a timer for FAE.

You said you were growing blue oysters. A PMP is a terrible choice for oysters. PMPs don't generally provide enough FAE for cubes and oysters require more FAE than cubes do.

OK, I will look into a "Martha" instead.

Thankyou MudaFuka,
I was hoping that PMP would be a good thing, however, the massive response advising me not to, touching on diverse aspects, has made me to steer clear of PMPs now.
I have changed my mind now, thank you very much everyone.
Kind regards Johnny
