Super activated carbon as additive for cactus substrate
    #21080941 - 01/07/15 03:00 AM (9 years, 4 months ago)

Hello. I read in the mineral soil topic about the recommendation of adding some charcoal to the substrate.

I have a box of Super activated carbon in pellets. Please can you confirm that I can safely use this as a substitute for normal vegetal charcoal?

While I'm not 100% sure of what 'Super activated carbon' is. Most activated charcoal can be used as a soil amendment. Its job is to open the soil, increasing drainage and also make the cation exchange of the soil better. This basically means it has more of an ability to hold onto nutrients like soluble Nitrogen, which otherwise washes through the soil and leaches out.

Try it out in a few pots if you wish and report back with how they fare.

I made some biochar a while back and added it to my soil mix and composts.  It made a nice fluffy soil.  Cool thing about biochar is that when you cook carbon with heat it doesn't break down.  We sequester it.  This reminds me to make a new batch to add to my composts for the veggies this year.

I'm not sure what super activated charcoal is either.
Charcoal itself doesn't enrich the soil but like others have said it's great for oxygenation, drainage and absorbing stuff.
