Holy Cannabis: The Bible Tells Us So * 2
    #21090889 - 01/09/15 02:49 AM (9 years, 4 months ago)

The Torah: A Women's Commentary explains that the oil used to anoint sacred objects as well as the priests was to be made of four precious spices -- myrrh, cinnamon, cane and cassia -- combined with olive oil.

The common English translation of the third ingredient, replicated in most English versions of the five books of the Old Testament, is "aromatic cane." However, a different translation appears in The Living Torah where Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan writes that some sources identify "fragrant cane" -- "keneh bosem" in Hebrew -- with the English and Greek word "cannabis" referring to the hemp plant.

Kaplan's reference is significant. The Ben Yehuda Hebrew-English Dictionary, written by Eliezer Ben Yehuda, the father of modern Hebrew, defines the Hebrew word "kanabos" as hemp, a botanical relative of marijuana.

I saw a dope vid bout this on YouTube. It went wayyyyyyyyy deeper then just Keneh bosm being cannabis they obtained from the Scythians (also keneh bosm IS a Hebrew variation of the word the Scythians used for cannabis) but it also tells of original Hebrew mythology. Jehovah had a wife named ashra* who was said to have brought cannabis to the people! Just look up keneh bosm in the bible, and yes I'm thinking you might have watched it before...

Genesis 1:29
And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.

Funny ive recently read some good stuff on erowid recently talking about ancient peoples discovering cannabiss oils, the article then goes on to relate it to the beginnings of many moderon religions.  He speculates its earliest use was in the form of hemp oil which ancient peoples would eat and rub upon there bodies for its healing powers.

In the article the author talks about the old testament being mistranslated and the different translations ie. The koran, bible, and hebrew version

"There are even recipes for a holy anointing oil in the Bible within Exodus 30, saying, "Then the LORD said to Moses, "Take the following fine spices: 500 shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much (that is, 250 shekels) of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels of fragrant cane, 24 500 shekels of cassia -- all according to the sanctuary shekel -- and a hin of olive oil. Make these into a sacred anointing oil, a fragrant blend, the work of a perfumer. It will be the sacred anointing oil. . . . "Anoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them so they may serve me as priests."5

It's just a shame that religions often begin with psychoactive drugs and then gradually remove them.  No wonder they seem hollow after a time.

And not only that - but then they persecute the people who ingest the Substance that started the religion they think they believe in.

Guys, does topical cannabis even get you high. Somebody actually made a thread about it yesterday and said it didn't: breastfeeding mother using a medical marijuana balm

Furthermore, some types of cannabis have little to no psychoactives.

Every light seems to attract darkness.
Every good thing seems to attract people that are 'in it' for the wrong reasons. People attracted to fame, or the desire to use said thing's popularity for personal promotion. In the case of Christianity, they really went all out and basically exterminated all the gnostics and variants of that religion that were more... direct contact.

Quakers still have a fairly solid understanding of it, though.
And the Quaker meetings I've been to (like, 2!) have been very chilled and
supportive. I was really into Eastern religions as a kid, but now try and
find my way among 'my own' (Western) religious kin.

All I see in the bible as far psychoactive substances is alcohol, as in wine, Jesus drank and he helped people drink when they ran out, there's verses saying it's bad and there's verses saying it's good,,,when Jesus was accused of being a drunk, he simply said "...wisdom is proved right by all it's children".

to add other substances to that culture at that time I'm doubtful it would be proven true.

The most interesting parts are quotes from jesus and his disciples
if that is not yet twisted too far from the truth

That's because it was lost in translation. Cannabis has been used for thousands of years. Shit, many pre-modern bibles were printed on hemp paper.

Been meaning to get around to thinking about starting on thee ol' Dead Sea Scrolls. And the Gnostic Gospels. Maybe one day...

If anyone has a good book condensing the Dead Sea Scrolls, I'd be much appreciative. Really, any good books discussing Gnosticism any of you want to share? :awesome:

Highly recommended.  I finally finished the Nag Hammadi (Gnostic Gospels) last year, all the way through - I bought a copy of it when first published, way back when. Was mostly looking for stuff that could help illuminate experiences I'd been having.  Found some useful stuff there, you have to know how to read between the lines - they were worried about what might happen if they just flat out described it, I think.

Yup.

At 24, He Got Life Without Parole for Mailing LSD—and He's Not Alone

Tyler has served 21 years in prison and told the ACLU that he lost his mind after the first 10 years. He has repeatedly been held in isolation—leading to a mental breakdown so severe that in March 2013, he was found singing at the top of his lungs in his jail cell, naked and spreading feces all over himself.

"When Deadhead Timothy Tyler sent five grams of LSD to a friend, little did he know he was setting himself up to die behind bars.

The vegan loved to follow the Grateful Dead around the country, selling fried dough at concerts—and he had already been arrested twice for selling small amounts of acid and marijuana in 1991.

Tyler, sentenced in 1994 to life without parole at age 24, is one of 110 examples cited in an American Civil Liberties Union report on nonviolent offenders spending life in prison. Most are serving time for drug offenses, and, of 646 sentences reviewed by the ACLU, 83 percent had been imprisoned without parole for nonviolent crimes.

But a bipartisan tide is rising against life without parole, particularly those sentences handed down as a result of laws requiring such judgments—regardless of the crime’s severity.

“People now understand the excess and cost and harm associated with this,” said Vanita Gupta, the ACLU’s deputy legal director and the report’s editor. “Every jurisdiction in the country that has these laws has a responsibility to ask, ‘Who are we really protecting?’”
42 Seconds: Pot Legalization and Marijuana Reform

At least 3,278 inmates are serving life without parole in federal prisons in the nine states that provide statistics, the ACLU reported. The cost to taxpayers: nearly $1.8 billion.

Louisiana, with some of the nation’s harshest sentencing laws, houses 429 nonviolent life-without-parole prisoners—tops in the country. Groups at both ends of the ideological spectrum have asked Louisiana to change its laws to allow discretion in such cases rather than force life sentences for crimes as minor as possession of a single crack rock.

“Mandatory minimum sentences create arbitrary outcomes by drawing essentially trivial lines between degrees of criminal activity that can result in dramatic differences in punishment,” noted an October report about Louisiana by a coalition of conservative groups. “[T]here are numerous potential reforms that might reduce the state’s prison population and corrections expenditures without compromising public safety.”

And in August, Attorney General Eric Holder ordered federal prosecutors to save mandatory sentences for more serious offenders.

“We must ensure that our most severe mandatory minimum penalties are reserved for serious, high-level, or violent drug traffickers,” Holder wrote in a memorandum on the issue. “Long sentences for low-level, nonviolent drug offenses do not promote public safety, deterrence, and rehabilitation.”
Top Democrat and Republican Pass the Peace Pipe on Pot Legislation

Several states also are considering reforms to mandatory sentencing laws, Gupta said. Such laws negate the role of a judge, she said.

“It puts all the sentencing power in the hands of the prosecutor,” she said. “In case after case after case, judges have said on the record they were upset but their hands were tied.”

In Tyler's case, he pleaded guilty to two LSD-related drug crimes after his public defender told him those pleas would get him a reduced sentence of 21 years. Instead, he was sentenced to mandatory life without parole on each count because of his priors.

"Life, it says, but life means you die in prison," Tyler told the ACLU."

Meet the Grandpa Doing Life Without Parole—for Pot

Mizanskey was charged with “possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver and distribute.” His only previous brushes with the law were two arrests, years earlier, also for nonviolent marijuana offenses. He pleaded not guilty to this one, though, insisting he hadn’t known about the deal at the Super 8 until it was already going down. Whether or not that’s true—and even recognizing that once it was clear he was in the middle of a pot deal he didn’t walk out, but stuck around until Quintana left holding the score—by all accounts he played the smallest role of anyone in Room 219. He hadn’t driven the car that brought in the weed, nor was he the one who carried it out of the motel room. Despite all that, he got by far the harshest sentence: life in prison, with no possibility of parole.
