Clickbait based on Research Studies * 1
    #21084668 - 01/07/15 09:44 PM (9 years, 4 months ago)

Headline:  "Mom Was Right: You’ll Catch a Cold from Being Cold"

Abstract from Scientific Journal:  "Most isolates of human rhinovirus, the common cold virus, replicate more robustly at the cool temperatures found in the nasal cavity (33–35 °C) than at core body temperature (37 °C)."

I'd like to see a social psychology study on precisely how much you need to distort the truth to maintain your blogging paycheck, and whether it is worth some journalistic integrity.

Exactly how many fewer clickers would we have if the headline stated:

"Mom was somewhat correct according to this study - if you contracted the common cold virus, the chances of getting really sick increase when you're out in the cold."

Would that be the death of your career?

Discuss.

It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence.

I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too.  If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

Yeah, I hear ya.  From what I can tell, journalism as an honorable enterprise has pretty much been dead for over a hundred years.  At least according to the best journalists I've read from back then.

It speaks wonders about human motivation.  The promise of something novel is so fucking irresistible, one is compelled to click and see.... You'd think, however, it comes with the fundamental risk of disappointing your reader, when the facts of the scientific study do not match up with the claims, all one's future works would be disregarded as bogus shit henceforth.

But the journalist triumphs, because the curiosity gap seldom extends beyond the headline or its contents, the majority are not intrigued enough to read the research study or think critically about it...

It's just junk food to consume and regurgitate...  The potential for scientific progress to inform society at large is perpetually reined in by its commercialization. :ohwell:

I know that most bloggers don't make much money, but I've seen the same sensationalism based off of research studies on the local news every day long before blogging took off.  It's grim all around if you ask me.

FWIW, whenever I criticize anything on social media it's ignored.  Yesterday I criticized somebody's post of a local startup business partnering with Whole Foods to trolley food to communities out of reach of healthy, "inexpensive" fresh produce, under the guise of care for community and food.  Of all the phenomenal local alternatives, which are infinitely more concerned with the quality of community and food, why the fuck would anyone partner with Whole Foods?  Obvious entrepreneur with self-interest to me...

That clickbait aspect of it has been there for a long time, yes. Two things that contribute to this:

  • journalists write in a different genre than scientists (part of the point of journalism is to aggravate people and create an interesting twist)

  • Well, that's debatable, I think the ideal is to inform and to speculate...  Alas, nobody would give a flying fuck if that was the case, so instead it sensationalizes to subsist.

Maybe your approach and voice are wrong then. Maybe you're too polite, factual and/or academic in your critique. That style is very easily ignored in social media. If you go up against commercial or psychological operations your critique will be ignored (or removed) as well.

Probably.... The FB post from the OP was a Discover Magazine link:

    http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/d-brief/2015/01/06/catch-cold-being-cold/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+DiscoverBlogs+%28Discover+Blogs%29#.VK5ON8Y6FSV

    And the poster's comment was:

"Very interesting. Recently I'd heard that recycled air in enclosed spaces was a more critical factor but this seems to refute that."

    and I responded:

"It doesn't refute that at all, rather it says that the virus replicates more robustly at colder temperatures. The way you get the virus in the first place is because somebody sick either coughs or sneezes, and you inhale some of that, or more likely coughs or blows their nose and touches something you in turn touch... If you don't want to get sick, avoid hanging out with sick people... Those little surgical masks you see asians wearing btw are for when that person is sick, to avoid spreading germs, they don't wear them because they're germaphobic..."

Discussion, no... I did, however, get two "likes".

    if i'm understanding you correctly...

take the case of the "school teacher" who invented "Airborne"

she was sued and almost lost her product because she made claims about its ability to fight the common cold.  Some years back, before they redeveloped the product, there was no science to back up her claims, and the product was proven BY SCIENCE to have no effect on one's immune response or resistance to the cold

Alas, I was never fishing for likes, but rather raising a point about the way in which journalism capitalizes on distorting scientific research by validating some long held superstition.  There's an obvious niche in the market for it, but I think we could hold them to higher standards and task them with creating an interesting story without making shit up.

Well, the post was about journalism, but of course, a lot of shit is sold as dietary supplements that have no proven medical value... In the case of Airborne, they were sued for false advertising and pretty sure they paid up tens of millions of dollars.  Didn't put them out of business, I saw some while shopping at Walgreens the other day.

The ones that really get me, that I see everywhere now, are those downright lies; 'lose 40 pounds with this one weird trick', 'mum discovers anti aging blah blah blah'

Makes me feel a little nauseous to think that our species has come to the point of advertising such falseness, and the fact that for someone, it's obviously worth doing so!

It will only destroy what you are not.

Discover , is so inept at the genre, I'm not sure how they stay in business, I'm hoping this story gets picked up by THE WORLD'S ONLY RELIABLE NEWS. I'm hoping The World News mentions mice and Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nihm, something sadly missing from the Discover article. The lag time for a topic appearing in the World News after it has appeared in other magazines and papers used to be about three weeks, don't know what it is now that they're digital, can't wait though to see what they do with this story.
